Crossing the Gates into Racing History

The museum begins with a walk through the glass-enclosed galleries showcasing bronze statues of renowned thoroughbred horses and their jockeys, featuring the legendary Secretariat, California Chrome, and the VISA Three Year Old Championship Trophy, which is the outcome of a series of races held from 1996 to 2000.

As you approach the gates, the museum experience starts. Once you pass through the gates and hear the doors creaking open along with the ringing of bells, you’re in for a delightful experience. Next, we explore the rich history of racing in America.

I have always been intrigued by the history of horse racing in America, and these galleries provided some answers. The origins trace back to the 1660s, even before the republic was established, as colonists settling in the thirteen colonies from New York to Virginia cultivated a strong passion for the sport. They utilized race strips carved out of forested land, which eventually transformed into the tracks we know today. What caught me off guard were the prominent racing hubs: Williamsburg, VA, and Annapolis, MN. Racing would also spread further south to Charleston, SC. Nevertheless, this activity faced outright bans in regions like New England and Pennsylvania, where Puritan values were more prevalent.

The Civil War Plays a Pivotal Role

In the galleries, you will experience the rich history of thoroughbred racing, spanning the unique eras of pre-Civil War and post-Civil War. The museum skillfully weaves together the early tensions that led to the Civil War in the United States, viewed through the lens of thoroughbred racing, including the North vs. South competitions, the impact of the War of 1812 on the importation and breeding of horses from England into American thoroughbreds, and the sport’s growing popularity. The Civil War served as a significant pause for the sport, as horses were conscripted into service, resulting in many casualties. However, this period also contributed to the revival of racing in regions like Kentucky and Saratoga Springs, ultimately leading to its evolution into the national sport we know today. Throughout both galleries, you will find a wealth of paintings, documents, and trophies preserved for posterity. I found the interplay between the sport’s evolution and the history of the United States, along with the many innovations of the 20th century, to be truly captivating.

The Hall of Fame is surrounded by additional galleries, one of which showcases a skeletal model of a typical racehorse, accompanied by a video detailing horse anatomy. Another gallery highlights the prestigious Triple Crown winners, featuring legends like Secretariat, War Admiral, and the latest champions, American Pharoah and Justify, who won in 2015 and 2018 respectively. Finally, the Steeplechase Gallery delves into the world of thoroughbred racing with obstacles, rounding off the gallery experience (or starting it, depending on your chosen path).

Conclude Your Visit at The Hall of Fame

Once you explore the galleries, you will encounter the Hall of Fame. Here, you’ll find the racing silks or jockey silks that riders wore, symbolizing the ownership of the individual racehorses displayed on the walls of the Hall of Fame. This section also delves into the various tracks that are still in operation today as well as those from the past, accompanied by a brief history detailing how these tracks came into being. Some notable examples include Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, Tampa Bay Downs, Santa Anita, and of course, Saratoga. Additionally, there’s an impressive 360-degree experience film presented at the top of every hour titled “What it Takes.” Your admission covers this film, and it is definitely worth your time to watch.

Should you visit The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame?

Although I’m not particularly a fan or even a casual fan of horse racing, I recognize some of the names and faces. I found it fascinating to explore how the sport has developed alongside the history and evolution of the United States. I left with new insights, and I believe you’ll gain something as well. You definitely don’t need to be a horse racing enthusiast to enjoy and value this museum and Hall of Fame. However, if you are a fan, your visit will likely be even more rewarding.

Have you ever been to the airport and you feel like you need to take out a loan just to cover your travel day? It can get quite pricey, and for good reason. Once you step into the airport, you’re immediately faced with security protocols, which often means saying goodbye to that refreshing Fiji water bottle or your favorite soda, iced tea, or coffee that you picked up on your way. You might also have to part with that body wash you accidentally left in your bag after checking in your suitcase (trust me, I’ve been there!). After navigating through security, you’re likely to feel quite hungry, but the fast food stops and that Starbucks inside the terminal tend to charge prices that are significantly higher than what you’d find outside. You’re definitely not alone in this; millions of travelers experience the same situation every hour of every day. Fortunately, there are strategies to help you manage the expensive airport experience, even when faced with connections, delays, and cancellations. The key lies in being well-prepared and understanding what to expect. Let’s explore together the four strategies you can employ to keep your costs in check on travel day.

I Just Want to Park, Ride and Fly

Although a lot of travelers choose to take Uber, Lyft, or taxis to reach the airport, some prefer the convenience of driving themselves. If you share my preference for driving to the airport, you'll be pleased to know that there are numerous off-site parking options available to make your journey smoother and more convenient:

• Offsite Airport Parking: These parking facilities are situated just a mile or two away from the airport, providing a cost-effective alternative where you can park your vehicle for as little as one-third of the airport's rates. Many of these lots feature a complimentary shuttle service that frequently transports passengers to and from the airport, ensuring convenience. Additionally, most of these facilities are securely fenced and monitored around the clock for your peace of mind.

• Offsite Garages: Certain airports provide shuttle services from nearby parking garages, allowing travelers to park their cars and easily reach the airport. For instance, the Logan Express service at Boston's Logan International Airport features three garage locations within a 20-mile radius, offering significantly lower parking rates compared to the airport itself, with a small fee for the shuttle service.

• Hotel Parking: Numerous hotels offer special discounted parking rates for guests who need to leave their vehicles for a few days or even a week. It's important to assess the surrounding area and the security measures in place at the hotel parking lot to determine if this option is suitable for your needs.

For those who prefer to drive to the airport, these alternatives provide a budget-friendly choice, yet you might still consider using services like Uber, Lyft, or a taxi for added convenience.

The Airport Lounge Could Save You Money

Did you know the airport lounge is one of the more cost effective ways to cover your food and drink needs, especially for those long layovers or for a flight delay, and even for those times when you get to the airport way too early? Each lounge varies in its offerings, but you can often find complimentary snacks, drinks, fresh fruits, and more, all in a cozy atmosphere for a relatively small fee. It's important to note that different lounges come with their own set of guidelines and requirements, so taking the time to read through the details can save you some hassle.

Larger airports often feature both independent lounges, alongside lounges associated with credit cards - such as the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club and the Capitol One Lounge, and/or specific airlines such as the Delta Sky Club and American Airlines Admirals Club. All of these lounges have their own specific requirements, so you will need to check with your airport lounge ahead of time. While these lounges may sound appealing, it's worth considering that many of these cards might have hefty annual fees that may not be ideal for travelers aiming to keep costs down. If you're in possession of one of those credit cards, it’s a good idea to review the benefits section to see if lounge access is included, potentially at a reduced fee.

Another option is to head up to the lounge and inquire whether they provide a day pass for a fee. In my experience of visiting the Escape Lounge at Bradley International Airport, I found that it was incredibly easy to pay ahead and enter the lounge, just needing my boarding pass. It's important to remember that these lounges are often most worthwhile if you’re facing a lengthy layover or if you have some extra time before it’s time to board your flight. Additionally, if you’re a member of the military, you might have the opportunity to access these lounges completely free of charge. Utilizing airport lounges can be a fantastic way to enhance your flying experience, and ultimately save you money in the long run.

Other Ways to Save When You Have to Eat at the Airport

No matter if you find yourself with a lengthy layover or just a short period at the airport before your flight, satisfying your hunger is essential. Although airport food prices can be quite steep, there are clever strategies to avoid overspending as you embark on your travel adventure:

• Take advantage of the fast food outlets or food courts within the airport: Chains like McDonald's often have apps that provide discounts and allow you to place orders ahead of time. While prices may still be higher than usual, using these apps can help ease the financial burden a bit. Additionally, you might discover some local dining options in the food court that offer unique flavors.

• Convenience stores are a common sight in many airports, stocking a variety of snacks and beverages, including both healthy and indulgent choices. Some stores also feature ready-made sandwiches and salads, which can be convenient but may come with a higher price tag. It's wise to compare prices to ensure you're making a choice that fits your budget.

• Vending machines are available in airports, serving as a backup option for quick snacks. While they might not be the first choice, some machines do carry healthier options like sandwiches and salads. Although the prices can be steep, focusing on just one item can help manage costs.

• Numerous airports feature a variety of bars and restaurants offering extensive menus filled with appetizers and small plates. It's a good idea to review the prices to ensure they fit your budget. When it comes to drinks, consider opting for water with lemon or a soft drink instead of splurging on a pricey cocktail, as this choice will help you stay refreshed without breaking the bank. I recommend this approach as a last resort if you're trying to save some money while traveling.

My strategy has always been to eat like it's a snack and stick with one or two items. This keeps your costs down, while satisfying your hunger.

Bring Your Own Water Bottle and Snacks

If you're someone who simply wants to board the plane and can entertain yourself while waiting, the most budget-friendly option is to bring your own water bottle and utilize the refilling stations that many airports now offer. These stations, previously known as "water fountains," have evolved to provide filtered water, making them a great resource. A quick search on Amazon will reveal a variety of options, including collapsible water bottles that are perfect for maximizing space in your carry-on. Brands like Yeti also offer insulated bottles that keep your drinks at the right temperature. Just remember to fill your bottle only after passing through security, and you'll be all set. Regarding snacks, it's a good idea to check the TSA website for guidelines, but generally, you can pack dry snacks like candy, cookies, and crackers in your carry-on. As long as your snacks are not liquid or gel-based, you should be fine. However, be prepared to possibly discard any food items if necessary, and it's always best to inform security personnel as you go through the line.

Explore the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

As you step into the Hall of Fame museum, you'll be greeted by a collection of statues representing various baseball players from different eras. Upon entering, you simply pay the admission fee and receive a wristband. They will inform you of their closing time (my suggestion is to arrive around opening time if possible), and you have the freedom to leave and come back as often as you like throughout the day. This flexibility is great since there’s so much information that it could be a bit overwhelming for some visitors. Personally, I enjoy museums, but I appreciate having breaks even more. It’s also a wonderful way to contribute to the local economy. Once inside the museum, you’ll find three floors, and a guide will recommend starting on the second floor. This area covers the history and evolution of baseball, and that’s where we'll start!

Start on the Second Floor: Digging into America’s Pastime

 “Baseball is a ballet without music” - Ernie Harwell, 1935

The second floor is a blend of older exhibits on legendary ball players from the game but also newer (and more colorful) exhibits on different aspects from the game with contributions from black, Latin and women ball players. Similar to many museums, this one also features a film to welcome its visitors. At the Grandstand Theatre, guests are treated to a 15-minute film that explores the reasons behind baseball's enduring connection with people, as well as significant moments in its history. While I awaited the film, I started my visit at the exhibit titled Picturing America’s Pastime, which showcases a collection of candid black and white and color photographs of baseball players. I have a particular fondness for candid photography, as it captures moments in their most genuine and unfiltered form, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations. I also have a deep appreciation for baseball photography. As I continue to travel, my goal is not only to explore all 50 states but also to see every baseball stadium across America. The candid images included legendary baseball player George "Babe" Ruth interacting with Japanese baseball players during a visit to the Fresno Athletic Club in 1927, a time known for “barnstorming,” when baseball players and teams traveled extensively throughout the country. As a Mets fan, I found it amusing to see a photograph of Homer the Beagle cheering for the Mets while “holding” a Lets Go Mets sign. The candid photographs also featured former pitcher Tim Lincecum, recognized for his unique windup before pitching, and Jackie Robinson, who finally disregarded the “keep out” sign at the Dodgers facility, paving the way for integration in the sport.

The next stop was the Taking the Field exhibit, which explores baseball’s origin story in the 19th century featuring numerous preserved artifacts including figurines, plates, uniforms, baseballs, bats and newspaper articles. There was also a homemade trophy of baseballs and bats. You’ll see how the game evolved from backyards and parks to grow more organized and eventually into a business with the formation of the National League in 1876. This would form one half of the nucleus that Major League Baseball represents today. The American League would form in 1901, and both currently constitute Major League Baseball as it stands today. I then proceeded to the exhibit focused on Babe Ruth, which chronicles his life story, starting as a pitcher for the Red Sox and later transforming into the iconic hitter he is celebrated as today, culminating in his transfer to the Yankees, which cemented his legacy in baseball history.

One exhibit that really caught my attention was The Souls of the Game, which chronicles the history of the Negro Leagues and the eventual integration that occurred when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Although it occupies a limited space, it is thoughtfully designed with a variety of artifacts on display, illustrating how, despite segregation, team owners made significant advancements in enhancing the game, making integration inevitable, and it was the right thing to do. Baseball is the first of the major sports to integrate its players, remarkably ahead of its time.

I explored the exhibit on women in baseball, titled Diamond Dreams. It highlights the many women who have served as announcers, journalists, team owners, and have managed the front offices and operations of baseball teams. If you’ve ever watched the movie "A League of Their Own," you might be interested to know there’s an exhibit dedicated to the AAGPBL, a women’s professional baseball league that was active from 1943 to 1954. Given the growing success of women’s sports, it raises the question of whether this league could potentially make a comeback in the future as the female counterpart to Major League Baseball.

I moved on to the very colorful Viva Baseball, which highlights the contributions of Latin ballplayers. From the very beginning, you'll see that the exhibits are presented in both English and Spanish, which I found captivating since I've always been curious about how and why the game has such a strong presence in Latin America. It all began in Cuba when students who were traveling in the United States discovered the game in the 1850s and brought it back to Cuba in the 1860s, where it quickly gained popularity, primarily as a form of resistance against Spanish colonial rule. Cubans began to spread baseball throughout the Caribbean. It then made its way to the Dominican Republic, where many semi-professional and farm teams emerged. Puerto Rico welcomed baseball at the turn of the century, further boosted by the arrival of the US Military on the island. Eventually, Mexico, Venezuela, and Central America also adopted the game. One thing I continually hear and observe is that baseball has a certain rhythm to it, whether it's from a pitcher or a hitter, and I wholeheartedly agree. Perhaps that rhythm is what makes the game so appealing.

Finally, the Whole New Ballgame exhibit the Whole New Ballgame exhibit explores the cultural influence and development of the game over the past 50 years. I found this particularly intriguing as it delves deeper than just the surface of baseball, analyzing the essential elements that drive the game. Topics like free agency, franchise relocations, Sports Illustrated covers, movie posters, and the numerous products released throughout the years are all included. Additionally, there’s a video board featuring a collection of amusing and captivating highlights.

Continuing onto your Second Stop to the Third Floor

I started my journey at Your Team Today, and as you enter, you'll notice the inductees for this year's Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony typically occurs in July and is quite a sight to behold. During my time there, I spotted the large posters featuring Todd Helton, Jim Leyland, Joe Mauer, and Adrian Beltre. Additionally, you'll find a collection of baseball lockers that represent all the teams in Major League Baseball. This exhibit, called Your Team Today, showcases a variety of artifacts from each team, reflecting their recent history, all beautifully displayed in glass cases. As a Mets fan, I was drawn to the display that featured several items, including the helmet worn by David Wright during his final game on September 29, 2018. It also highlighted the no-hitter achieved by the team in 2022 and the Mr. Met Trumpet, which was played during Edwin Diaz's entrances as the closing pitcher that season. Furthermore, there's an area called Shoebox Treasures that displays collectibles from the game, ranging from baseball cards to trading cards, and you even have the option to create your own custom card. Lastly, Autumn Glory showcases the development of the baseball postseason playoffs and the World Series, featuring a display of numerous World Series rings.

One Last Stop is the First Floor

The first floor ultimately serves as the concluding point of the museum, featuring an art exhibit focused on baseball. The crown jewel here is the Hall of Fame Gallery, which showcases busts and life-size statues of baseball players and coaches from their playing days, along with concise biographies of each. This part of the museum is intriguing as it highlights the names that have been inducted over the years. However, there are certainly some prominent figures absent from this list who merit recognition, and it is hoped that this will be addressed in the future. Visitors will encounter baseball players who are not without their flaws, igniting ongoing debates among fans about the intersection of statistics and personal character. Regardless, this section of the museum is truly impressive and should not be missed during your visit. My last stop was Baseball at the Movies, which connects to how I first became a baseball fan! Here, you can find various movie posters, including Field of Dreams, 42, Rookie of the Year, and Major League, among others. Additionally, the gift shop is located on this floor, offering custom jerseys, memorabilia, magnets, t-shirts, and much more. However, it might be worth exploring the surrounding area for these items, as you may find more unique options at better prices!

Walk and Wander through the streets of Cooperstown

The museum is clearly the main attraction in this small town, and a mini industry of baseball has developed around it. In this small downtown area, you’ll find a mix of local restaurants, bars, tap rooms, coffee shops and of course, baseball stores. Everything from merchandise like jerseys, shirts and hats of every team and player to baseball cards and collectibles. If you’re a baseball fan, this is the town for you. This is also small town America in full display. You won't see big chain stores here, it's all "mom and pop" shops and it's a wonderful throwback to a time where that was far more commonplace. Unfortunately, I also noticed a lot of closed shops in the downtown area as well.

Where to Stay in Cooperstown

Cooperstown offers a variety of campsites, locally owned bed and breakfast hotels, and vacation rentals. Being situated in a more rural area of Upstate New York, you won't find many hotel chains in the vicinity. In fact, this part of New York state lacks major interstate highways. The nearest town to Cooperstown is Oneonta, which has a few chain hotels. Utica and Albany are both a short drive away from Cooperstown, approximately 60-90 minutes, and provide more accommodation options. During my visit, I stayed at the Residence Inn Albany Airport, which was quite pleasant. The drive from my hotel to Cooperstown took about 90 minutes, mostly along scenic highways. You can certainly enjoy a long weekend in this area of New York state, as Cooperstown is located at the end of Oswego Lake and lies in the eastern part of the Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York.

Things to Do in Cooperstown

Cooperstown is not just for baseball history, there are plenty of other area attractions to check out while in town:

• Fenimore Art Museum: Art museum that features numerous Native American artifacts, landscape paintings, all set within a 1930's neo-Georgian mansion. Located at 5798 NY-80, Cooperstown, NY, open daily from 10am-5pm.

• Fenimore Farm & Country Village: Reenactments of village life in Cooperstown in the 19th century, with farm animals and a carousel on site. Located at 5775 NY-80, Cooperstown, NY just down the road from the Fenimore Art Museum, open daily from 10am-5pm.

• Hyde Hall Mansion: Overlooking Ostego Lake, this historic mansion preserved from the 1800s features mansion and ghost tours. Located at 267 Glimmerglass State Park Road, Cooperstown, NY. This is a seasonal attraction, only open from Memorial Day weekend until Halloween. Check website for tours if interested.

• Glimmerglass State Park: Park that includes a beach facing Ostego Lake, wooded trails featuring numerous wildlife - including an uphill trail that overlooks the lake. Hyde Hall Mansion is located within the park's boundaries, but tours are available for separate admission as mentioned.

• Glimmerglass Queen Boat Tours: Take a cruise along Ostego Lake! Great way to introduce yourself to this lovely area of Upstate New York. Tours depart and arrive at the Lake Front Hotel on 10 Fair St, Cooperstown, NY. Tours are seasonal and in operation between Memorial Day weekend and Columbus Day weekend - trips run Weds-Sunday at the start and end of the season, but runs daily between late June and late August.

• Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum: Hall of Fame baseball players and Hollywood characters immortalized as wax statues. Located at 99 Main St, Cooperstown, NY, open daily 10am-7:30pm.

Where to Drink and Eat in Cooperstown: Brewery Ommegang

Brewery Ommegang has been in business since the late 1990s and is well-known for its Belgian-style beers. In addition to these, they also produce a range of other beers. I have enjoyed their brews for many years, and lately, I've found myself gravitating more towards the Belgian style beers. This prompted me to visit their home base in Cooperstown, where they also serve food. I settled in for a beer flight, and maybe one more afterwards (with food of course!)

My beer flight consisted of the following beers:

• Abbey Ale: A Belgian Dubbel with sweet orange peel, coriander, cumin, star anise and licorice.

• Gnommegang: A Belgian style blonde ale

• Three Philosophers: Belgian style quad with a hint of Belgian kriek

• Grand Cru (special): Belgian Duark aged in bourbon barrels for 9 months and then blended with a quad

Grand Cru wins in a stunning upset. I didn’t think it would beat the standbys Abbey Ale and Three Philosophers but it did. Aging beer in bourbon barrels only works sometimes but not only does this work, it smooths out the rough edges and it gives it a nice smooth flavor. It’s a quadruple, so it’s a bit strong, but it has a clean finish. My second favorite is the Gnommegang, which was light and refreshing, and one I started with!

Brewery Ommegang has a limited food menu, with appetizers and entrees available, and usually some specials. For entrees, they have the usual standbys - burgers, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, etc. I did notice a chicken and waffles, and since I don’t have that all the time, I settled on that. I also wanted food that would pair well with a full pour of the Grand Cru.

This did not disappoint. A buttermilk chicken breast sitting on top of a Belgian waffle dressed with maple syrup, cream, strawberry jam, bacon and green onions. How can you go wrong? And it was as good as it sounds.

Brewery Ommegang has plenty of seating and a lively atmosphere, the service is fantastic, and it is a great stop if you’re heading back to your hotel or just want a place to relax and unwind after a day of baseball history. Their beers are top notch and the food is fantastic. You really can’t go wrong.

If you're interested in guided tasting tours, where the staff will guide you through your tasting journey, there are numerous slots available on the weekends. Tastings include a complementary draft pour.

Walk and Wander through Charleston's French Quarter

On the first day of any city I visit, I like to “walk and wander”, starting with a particular stop in the city and going from there. It's a bit risky because you might accidentally wander into a sketchy area, but it's still an exciting way to discover a place for the first time. Before embarking on this adventure, I usually check Google Maps to find interesting places to visit. While moving through, I came across the Charleston City Market and the Charleston Museum, which caught my attention. I checked the distance between the two on the map and realized it was just a short walk away. So, I decided to use this opportunity to wander around and soak up the city's atmosphere.

What really caught my attention was the city's character and architecture. It has this charming old-fashioned vibe, yet it feels so laid-back. Even though I visited during the "offseason" between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the town was still bustling with activity. The sidewalks are mostly made of stone and the streets are narrow, but surprisingly, it doesn't feel overcrowded or too touristy. They've done a remarkable job preserving the city's overall character while ensuring smooth traffic flow. The layout and colors of the buildings left me in awe, as they transport you to a different era while still maintaining a modern touch. Just by strolling through the streets, you can sense the rich history that has been beautifully preserved.

Explore The Charleston Museum

This spot is located near the Visitors Center on Meeting St. It's conveniently close to the bustling city center, yet it maintains its own unique charm. Being the oldest natural history museum in North America, it has gone through several relocations before settling in its current spot. Nevertheless, it's still fascinating to witness the city's transformation into what it is today. What struck me was the stark contrast between the city's violent history during the American Revolution, the Civil War, and subsequent periods, and its current relaxed atmosphere. The museum showcases the early days of Charleston as a port city for the Spanish, British, and eventually the Americans. Additionally, there's an impressive exhibit that delves into the city's involvement in the Civil War, from South Carolina's secession to its eventual readmission into the Union. Lastly, there's a captivating natural history exhibit that highlights the diverse fauna and animals that have thrived in this region up to the present day. They've got some exciting plans for the future, including exhibits on Reconstruction and the 20th century. It's impressive how well they've written these exhibits. Although the museum may not be in its prime, it's definitely worth a visit. Supporting museums like this by visiting and showing your patronage is the best way to ensure their growth and development.

Walk Through The Charleston City Market

During my first two days in the city, I made sure to visit this marketplace. It became almost a tradition for me to start my day here, exploring the vibrant atmosphere. Spanning four city blocks, this market is a unique blend of open-air and closed-air sections. Local artisans showcase their craftsmanship, offering a diverse range of products from jewelry and shirts to art prints. As I walked through the open-air area, I appreciated the absence of pushy salespeople. However, they were always ready to answer any questions I had. The market is brimming with creativity, even boasting a cigar merchant who infuses Dominican-made cigars with bourbon and moonshine. Inside the enclosed section, I discovered a mini general store and a cozy coffee shop, all run by local merchants. Some of them even sell delicious food. It's truly a wonderful place to walk around, and I made sure to collect business cards from a few merchants, planning to order some of their incredible art prints in the future for my home. This marketplace also serves as a fantastic introduction to the city of Charleston.

Join a Gray Line Bus Tour of Charleston

On the second day, I took tour of the city using the Gray Line Tour Bus. This tour was quite comprehensive as it went beyond the downtown area and showcased the rest of the city. The tour guide providing a synopsis of the history of the city (wars and even earthquakes galore!), with some interesting facts that you may not know about Charleston (it is the second most bombarded in war besides the nearby Fort Sumter, and did I mention they had a bad earthquake too?). In addition, most of the land is filled, similar to another colonial type city - Boston. The tour lasted for about 90 minutes and was definitely worth it, although I was surprised they didn't offer "hop on/hop off" tours. If you prefer a carriage tour, there are plenty of options available too.

Take a Tour of Fort Sumter National Park

Part of the package that I purchased for the tour also included a tour of the Fort Sumter National Park. At the conclusion of the city tour, I was dropped off at Liberty Square. Some people on the tour were also touring the site as well, so it was nice to see some semi-familiar faces. After listening to a brief explanation of the history of Fort Sumter’s historical significance to the city and the nation at the time of the American Civil War, we proceeded to get in line to enter the ferry. The ferry had plenty of seating on the lower and upper deck. As the upper deck was fairly packed, I proceeded to move to the lower deck where I found a seat I liked near one of the windows. I opened the windows to let the fresh air in. After a 30 minute boat ride, we landed at Fort Sumter.

What amazed me about Fort Sumter was how much of it still stands after all these years. I'm sure they've reinforced some parts, but it's mostly in ruins. However, it's perfectly safe to explore. This particular tour is managed by the National Park Service, and there’s usually a park ranger that gives a talk on the existence of the fort, with the build up and eventual destruction. There’s also a museum that gives an explanation of the history of the fort in case you miss anything (like I did!). I was on the last tour of the day, so I got to see the flag lowering. You have an hour on the island, which is plenty of time to hold your interest and you leave wanting to learn more. It was fascinating to see in person, and well worth a visit.

Is Charleston Worth the Visit?

Charleston is a very charming, relaxing city that is perfect for just about everyone. If you're looking to save some money, consider visiting during the "offseason" months (May-December) when hotel and activity prices are generally more reasonable. I enjoyed learning about the city's violent history at the Charleston Museum, and interacting with local merchants at the Charleston City Market. The city tour through Gray Line Tours was informative and entertaining, and there are many options for packaging and bundling your experiences, including visiting the great Fort Sumter National Park. Whatever you decide, it is a fantastic place to visit for any traveler.

Have Lunch at Virginia’s On King

This venue appears to be a pleasant option for lunch, operating until 3 PM, which positions it primarily as a breakfast and lunch spot. I grabbed a seat at the bar, and tried the Flounder BLT. It exceeded my expectations. The presence of bacon is always a positive sign, and when combined with the flounder and tartar sauce, it indeed created a delightful sandwich. The fries served were shoestring style, reminiscent of high-quality McDonald's fries, yet with actual flavor. The bacon was a thick-cut variety, contributing to a rich taste, although it did add a bit of greasiness to the sandwich.

Have Barbecue at Rodney Scott BBQ

I don't know if it was just because I went on a Monday night, but I left feeling kind of underwhelmed. The brisket was pretty tasty, but the whole hog pork was so bland that I thought about smothering it in sauce—which usually means the barbecue isn't great in my book. The Collard Greens were alright, and the hush puppies were decent when paired with the honey butter, but oddly enough, the cornbread didn't really need it. All in all, it was okay, but nothing to write home about.

Enjoy Seafood and Cocktails at Oyster House Seafood & O-Bar

I was craving crab cakes, and this spot really hit the mark. The crab cakes were perfectly flaky and had a nice texture - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The flavor was absolutely spot on; it was clear that the balance of the natural sweetness of the crab wasn't diluted by unnecessary seasoning. I also enjoyed a scoop of thick mashed potatoes and some delicious grilled asparagus on the side with its slight char enhancing the natural flavor of the vegetables. I opted for a Kentucky Mule as my beverage of choice, which perfectly paired with my meal. The blend of bourbon, ginger beer, and lime created a zesty and invigorating drink that enhanced the overall dining experience. The warmth of the bourbon harmonized with the flavors of the crab cakes. Honestly, this was one of the best dinners I’ve had in Charleston. The atmosphere of the restaurant was inviting, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. I would definitely return, and when you do, sit at the bar!

Enjoy Amazing Barbecue at Lewis BBQ

If you see a line stretching out the door on a weeknight after 7pm, it's probably worth checking out. I went for a half pound of brisket, a green chile Texas sausage, and got a side of Mac and Cheese along with Coleslaw. The brisket had that perfect crunchy bark, super flavorful and tender. The sausage was a highlight too, with an awesome taste and just enough spice. The sides didn't disappoint either; the mac and cheese was super cheesy and the coleslaw struck the right balance between creamy and a bit tangy from the vinegar. It's on the pricier side (total was $36!), but honestly, it's worth every penny. You absolutely need to stop by and make sure you come hungry—you won't regret it!

Explore the Booze of Charleston

When it comes to breweries, distilleries, and wineries, it's crucial to be responsible while enjoying yourself. The last thing you want is to experience a terrible and completely avoidable incident during your vacation.

Each place usually provides water and snacks, but I made sure to bring my own bag of pistachios and a big bottle of water during my visits. It's always a good idea to bring snacks or grab some food at these places. Some establishments even offer takeout delivery, so don't hesitate to ask. And if you find yourself in a situation where you've had too much to drink and snacks aren't helping, remember to call an Uber, Lyft, or taxi as a last resort. I can't emphasize this enough - please be responsible.

Now, let's talk beers and cocktails! This was completed over the three days I visited Charleston, SC

Have a Cocktail at The Loutrel Hotel

Located near Charleston City Market, this charming and relaxed hotel bar featured an outstanding bartender named Kevin who effortlessly managed the place all by himself. I spent a good four hours there, indulging in a fantastic Manhattan with Woodford Reserve, a delicious Jalapeño Mule, and a refreshing Bourbon splash cocktail. It was a great experience to be in a vibrant yet not overly crowded venue. Kevin was not only incredibly nice but also very approachable. We had a fantastic conversation about the Packers (I happened to be wearing my Green Bay Packers hat) and he generously provided me with numerous local recommendations for the area. Service and the drinks were top notch!

Sample and Sip on Whiskey at Firefly Distillery

I made a quick visit to this distillery to sample some of their whiskey and bourbon. I settled into their cozy bar area and took in a sampling of their spirits. The knowledgeable bartender guided me through the tasting process, sharing insights about the distillation methods and the ingredients used in their small batch production. Each sip revealed a new layer of complexity, from the smooth caramel notes to the subtle hints of spice and oak. After my sampler flight, I had their take on the Old Fashioned cocktail, and it was quite good. After thoroughly enjoying the tasting experience, I found myself particularly drawn to one specific small batch bourbon. Its rich, velvety texture and balanced flavor profile made it stand out. I knew I had to take a bottle home with me to savor, and I did!

Enjoy Craft Beers at Holy City Brewery

This is not only a brewery but also a lively bar. They had some intriguing brews, and I enjoyed a light appetizer to ensure I was fit to drive afterwards. I had the following for small pour beers, and i’ll give my ratings:

• Empire Oyster Saison (4 out of 5 stars): This was a dry hopped oyster saison that had a slight bite with the citra hops. Very good!

• Flannel Pants (4.25 out of 5 stars): This is a pumpkin spice flavored white ale. I recall it having a very light color with a nice blend of spice flavors with that slight infusion of pumpkin spice.

• Self-Explanatory (4.25 out of 5 stars): This was a kolsch beer that had a slight infusion of honey malt, which gave it a nice smooth flavor.

Sip on Belgian Beers at Munkle Brewery

Known locally for their Belgian beers, Munkle offers flavorful brews that can pack a punch, so I opted for the smaller pours, as I like to sample different beers before committing to a larger serving. Belgian beers are my favorite of all of the craft beers out there, so I will be biased in my opinions!:

• 3rd Floor Tripel (4.25 out of 5 stars): This is their “Belgian tripel”, it has a medium body, bright fruit finish with a peppery hop flavor. It smelled and tasted wonderful.

• Oud Brune (4 out of 5 stars): This is what is called a “flemish inspired brown ale”. It had a strong fruit flavor but also a chocolate flavor as well, very very good.

Why Charleston Is Worth Exploring for its Food and Booze

When you venture into a new city, your palate becomes a passport to its soul. From the bustling street food stalls to the quaint family-owned restaurants, the local cuisine serves as a gateway to understanding the customs and practices that shape the lives of its inhabitants. You can learn about the influence of various cultures through the fusion of flavors and techniques in traditional dishes, which often reveal the historical significance of migration and settlement patterns. Charleston is located by the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for its seafood, but being in the deep south, particularly the Carolinas, it’s also renowned for its unique barbecue flavor. All travelers should keep an open mind, but you’ll never go hungry!

A Clash of Empires in Pittsburgh

As you step out of the elevator on the fifth floor, you are welcomed by a remarkably lifelike mannequin of Tanaghrisson, the Ohio Iroquois leader. This marks the beginning of the Clash of Empires exhibit, which highlights the British, French, and Indian Wars, all of which converged in what is now recognized as Western Pennsylvania during that era.

Other lifelike mannequins representing various figures from the war are showcased, including George Washington, a Hungarian Red Coat soldier, and a former slave from Massachusetts who fought at Lake George. The narratives are captivating, and I was pleased to see a history museum address the diverse individuals and viewpoints of the war, without necessarily placing an opinion or judgement on the war itself. Additionally, there are many text and photo displays, along with video screens presenting dramatizations of the conflict.

The back galleries known as the Barensfeld Galleries usually has a temporary exhibit. During my particular visit, America 250 was on display and featured numerous paintings that took on a nuanced and balanced view of American society in this time.

From Slavery to Freedom

Most if not all American history museums have a slavery exhibit, and for good reason. It’s a shameful but essential part of American history where it is necessary to not be ashamed of it, but to use it as a teaching tool so it never returns and never comes back in future generations. This exhibit on the fourth floor offered a local connection in that many slaves who sought freedom would end up in not only Ohio but Western Pennsylvania. One huge takeaway for me was that post-abolition of slavery, there was also an extension of slavery that existed in Pennsylvania known as “indenture”, which existed until the Civil War. In my study of slavery in college, I was always fascinated with the shades of gray between free states and slave states, and this made me think more about how “free states” weren’t always so free.

Shattering Notions: Glass Making in Pittsburgh

Did you know Western Pennsylvania were home to several glass factories in the late 18th century? In fact, Western Pennsylvania emerged as a significant hub for glass manufacturing, thanks in large part to its abundant rivers that provided essential resources for the industry. This region was bustling with activity as skilled artisans crafted a wide array of glass products, ranging from elegant vases and sturdy pitchers to intricate lamps and lighting fixtures. The craftsmanship of these glassmakers not only catered to local demand but also contributed to the broader market, showcasing the artistry and innovation of the time. Modern manufacturers have embraced the historical techniques that defined the region's past while integrating contemporary advancements in technology and design. This blend of old and new allows for the creation of high-quality glass products.

Walking Through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

For many of us - myself included, the essence of our childhood was captured in the gentle charm of “Mister Rogers' Neighborhood”. Fred Rogers, the beloved host, was not only a television icon but also a proud native of Pittsburgh, where he spent his formative years. His deep connection to the city is palpable throughout the series, as he often infused the episodes with the spirit and values of his hometown. Pittsburgh, with its iconic skyline and numerous bridges, serves as a significant backdrop, enriching the narrative with a sense of place and community that resonates deeply with viewers.

This thoughtfully curated collection pays homage to both Fred Rogers and his groundbreaking show, highlighting how he seamlessly wove elements of his hometown into each episode. From the gentle cadence of his voice to the inviting decor of the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, every detail was meticulously crafted to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Is That A Giant Ketchup Bottle?!!

A remarkable feature of this museum is the Heinz exhibit, which highlights one of the largest companies globally that has called Pittsburgh home for many decades. I was captivated by how Heinz leveraged other local industries to create their iconic products. For instance, the glass bottles were crafted from clear glass to beautifully display the product inside. Everything, from the product itself to its marketing, was designed to project a sense of strength. One part of this exhibit that I particularly enjoyed was exploring the various products that Heinz has manufactured over the years from different parts of the world. Additionally, there’s an impressive tower made of glass Heinz Ketchup bottles, known as the Heinz Ketchup bottle tower, that rises majestically.

Why do I Enjoy the Senator John Heinz History Center?

I have always been a big believer in making history fun and approachable, as it can be a very dry and dull subject. Growing up through high school and college, I had a mix of good and bad history teachers, and I could always tell which of the teachers loved history and which of the teachers that just looked at it as a job. As a grown adult, I now use history museums as a way to learn about the area I am visiting, and sometimes my own backyard. History museums are incredible teaching tools for all ages, and have a unique quality in connecting with its visitors through its various exhibits. Many have interactive functions with touchscreens, but also feature lifelike and realistic mannequins representing the people of the time, and have detailed information that honors its subjects as they are - good and bad. This museum checks off all of those boxes. It’s colorful, three dimensional and honest about Pittsburgh’s growth and evolution into the city it is today.

Where to Eat, Drink and Stay Nearby

The Senator John Heinz History Center is on the north end of the Strip District, which like most of Pittsburgh, it had its heyday, seen its decline, and now rebirth. According to local guide Discover The Burgh, the Strip District has seen a renaissance only in recent years:

In the early days of the city the Strip District was an industrial neighborhood with foundaries, mills, and other production shops in abundance. Produce merchants also moved in, as did wholesalers and grocers thanks to the access to the nearby train lines.

Over the years these merchants and industries went into decline, and most of them moved out of the neighborhood entirely.

A recent revival in the district saw an influx of specialty stores, international retailers, and critically acclaimed restaurants moving in to the available (and iconic) spaces, transforming the Strip District into one of the most popular shopping neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.

Luckily for you and me, this area is experiencing an incredible rebirth. When I last visited in 2021, the seeds were being planted. Now, those very seeds have blossomed into a district that is full of life.

Where to Eat and Drink Nearby:

• Aslin Beer Co at The Terminal Market (1801 Smallman St, Pittsburgh, PA): Virginia-based brewery has a location at this former produce terminal that is now reborn as a market and home to numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Location boasts a spacious taproom that includes a game room and offers food options as well. The beer selection is vast, featuring everything from IPAs and lagers to my personal favorites: Italian pilsners, oak-aged maibocks, and barleywine.

• Tapville Social - Pittsburgh (1447 Smallman St, Pittsburgh, PA): I love self-serve taprooms, and this location combines self-serve with a full service bar and restaurant. The staff is friendly and inviting, and the food is fantastic. Beer and wine are available for self-serve pours, and cocktails are available at the full service bar.

• Balvanera Cocina Argentina (1660 Smallman St, Pittsburgh, PA): An Argentinian restaurant across from The Terminal Market. Signature offerings include expertly crafted tacos, savory empanadas, and a selection of delectable seafood options, all prepared with a creative twist. I had the Entrana (10 oz skirt steak) with Papas Fritas (fries), of which both were delicious. I also had a glass of Malbec red wine, and a “Buenos Aires x Manhattan” featuring a blend of bourbon, Fernet Branca, and vermouths. Food and drinks were excellent, and well worth it. Service was exceptional, and the bartenders were friendly and approachable.

Where to Stay Nearby:

• The Industrialist Hotel: Located just a short walk from the Strip District, this boutique hotel combines modern amenities with a touch of Pittsburgh’s industrial heritage. Guests can enjoy stylish rooms, a rooftop bar with stunning city views, and easy access to local attractions, making it a perfect base for exploring the vibrant neighborhood.

• Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown: This former Federal Reserve Bank turned hotel offers a convenient location within walking distance of the Strip District, featuring spacious rooms and a complimentary hot breakfast. Guests can unwind at the indoor pool or enjoy the evening kickback with free snacks and drinks, all while being just minutes away from the area’s lively shops and restaurants.

• Hampton Inn & Suites Pittsburgh Downtown: This hotel is another excellent choice for visitors wanting to stay close to the Strip District. With comfortable rooms, a complimentary breakfast, and a fitness center, it caters to both leisure and business travelers. Its prime location makes it easy to explore the eclectic shops and eateries that define the Strip District.

• Vrbo Vacation Rentals: Explore a variety of vacation rentals on Vrbo, ranging from charming historic homes to modern condos. Many properties are located within walking distance of the Strip District, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying the comforts of home. Look for rentals with amenities like kitchens and outdoor spaces for a more enjoyable stay.

Walk This Way

After parking my rental car in a nearby garage, I made my way to the Walk The Burgh location on Penn Ave, where I reviewed and signed a waiver required for participating in the tour. Waivers are standard practice for most, if not all tour operators. After reviewing and signing my waiver, I enjoyed a pleasant conversation with the owner and our tour guide about my hometown and the reasons for my visit to Pittsburgh while we waited for the other guests to arrive. The tour commenced promptly at 11am, with just a small group of two, including myself, alongside the tour guide. Walking tours can vary in size, accommodating either a few participants or larger crowds, and I have experienced both formats. Personally, I favor smaller groups as they create a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Our tour guide, Brian, was a friendly former history teacher who happened to live and work close to my home in Southern New England prior to moving back to Pittsburgh. Having once aspired to be a history teacher myself, I felt somewhat of a bond with him, and it made perfect sense to me—what better way to share historical knowledge than through a walking tour focused on history?

Art Deco: A Trio of Buildings Rich in History

As we started our walk towards our first stop of three Art Deco buildings, we passed the August Wilson African American Cultural Center on Liberty Ave, which was constructed in 2011. The difference between this modern structure and the older buildings around it is quite noticeable, yet they complement each other beautifully and seem to fit together at the same time.

Turning the corner from the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, we find ourselves on William Penn Place, where we’re encouraged to look up at the trio of Art Deco buildings that stand side by side along this street, as well as those directly across from each other on Seventh Ave::

• Drury Plaza Hotel: Here’s a fun fact - this modern day hotel once housed the Federal Reserve bank. Constructed in 1935, you can still see traces of its history today, like how the garage door now leads to an underground parking garage.

• Gulf Building: Originally built in 1932 as the headquarters for the Gulf Oil Corporation, the building stood as a symbol of the booming oil industry during the early 20th century. The Gulf Building showcases a blend of Art Deco and Beaux-Arts styles, and at one time was the home for offices for Gulf Oil and other businesses.

• Koppers Tower: Constructed in 1929 and commissioned by Andrew Mellon, the Koppers Tower stands out with its distinctive Art Deco style on the outside, with its Indiana limestone facade, polished granite base, and a striking copper roof. Koppers Chemical Corporation continues to call this home to this day as its global headquarters.

Concrete and Steel: The US Steel Building

We would walk up Seventh Ave before turning onto Grant St, where we encounter the tallest and largest structure in Pittsburgh - the 64-story US Steel Building. Ironically, US Steel has nearly vanished from the building that carries its name, which now houses UPMC (University of Pennsylvania Medical Center) along with other occupants. I couldn't help but observe that this contemporary style building, although made of steel, had a brown hue that almost resembled rust. This is intentional, as the steel was designed to change color when it comes into contact with oxygen, as well as when subjected to the varying weather conditions of Pittsburgh's four seasons.

One aspect that intrigued me during the tour was learning about the innovative features incorporated during its construction. BuildingsDB explains it further:

At the time of its completion in 1970 the U.S. Steel Tower incorporated solutions that were quite advanced at the time, these included…an underground wiring system and was one of the first to use fire-resistant liquid-filled columns.

The 18 exterior Cor-Ten steel columns that form the structural frame are hollow and filled with a mixture of water, antifreeze, and rust inhibitor. This system allows the liquid to dissipate heat in the event of a fire, enabling the columns to maintain structural integrity for up to four hours.

Throughout the tour, we would walk through the various city parks that sit in between these large, historic buildings - including the gorgeous Steel Plaza next to the US Steel Building, and the Mellon Green on the way to our next stop.

Another aspect of Pittsburgh’s architecture that struck me was seeing a historic church surrounded by skyscrapers, as it shows yet another stark contrast that compliments each other.

A Taste of Venice and Needing to Looking Up

We would walk down Ross St, then make a turn towards Fifth Ave, where two neighboring structures in Romanesque revival style stand, currently serving as the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail. These are the oldest surviving buildings in Pittsburgh, completed in 1888. The buildings are linked by a Bridge of Sighs, where those crossing would let out a sigh as they caught a fleeting view of the outside world while moving between the two. This bridge was also inspired by the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice. I was genuinely amazed when I first laid eyes on this building.

We would continue down Fifth Ave to Grant St, where we would see a collection of buildings inspired by the Chicago style of architecture, among these are the Frick Building and the now Omni William Penn Hotel.

However, the standout for me was the Union Trust Building, which was originally known as the Union Arcade. It was commissioned by industrialist Henry Clay Frick and opened its doors in 1917 as the Union Arcade. Brookline Connection provides a detailed look at what it was originally used for:

Known originally as the Union Arcade, it featured 240 shops and galleries. It was a precursor to the indoor shopping malls of the present day. The steeply-pitched mansard roof is adorned with terra cotta dormers and ornaments. Atop the roof are two chapel-like mechanical towers. The decorative interior is arranged about a central rotunda, capped by a stained glass dome. The levels above the fourth floor consisted of office space.

Sadly, the Arcade didn’t last long, and in 1923, the Union Trust Bank took over the building, renaming it the Union Trust Building. Over the years, it has seen many updates and renovations, but it still keeps its classy appearance even now.

Pittsburgh Magazine highlights that the building went through a huge restoration that wrapped up in 2016:

….the building required a complete overhaul — from removing asbestos from structural supports and maintaining its intricate embellishments to repairing elevators, installing air conditioning and reversing damage from failed efforts to clean its stone exterior. Two years and $100 million in historically sensitive renovations later, the Flemish-Gothic building built in 1917 by Henry Clay Frick has been brought back to life as a 21st-century home for offices, shops, dining and other uses.

In my experience of walking through the interior of the Union Trust Building, it was incredible to see how busy it was, and how gorgeous the interior was - but the true highlight for me was looking up and admiring the breathtaking Central Rotunda.

Walking the Cultural District and Market Square

Our last stops on the tour included walking through the Cultural District, and its history is almost reflective of the city itself, starting as a hub for arts and culture, it became a “red light district” of adult entertainment shops and parlors, but has since been cleaned up and restored to its former glory as Everything Explained Today points out:

Today the 14-square-block area continues to transform and flourish from a red-light district with only two cultural facilities - Heinz Hall and the Convention Center - to a dynamic arts and residential neighborhood with more than fourteen arts venues, including the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, public parks and plazas, and new commercial development. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust applies a holistic approach and vision to urban redevelopment: streetscaping programs, facade restorations, new cultural facilities, public open spaces and art projects.

Our walk continued through Gateway Center Park and made our way to Wintergarden, where we spotted some dinosaurs! Now sure, it’s the amusement park kind, but it works for me. To wrap up our day, we ended at the lovely Market Square, marking the conclusion of our tour.

Takeaways and Should You “Walk the Burgh”?

• Study in Contrasts: One major theme I've noticed during this tour is how Pittsburgh's downtown really showcases contrasts, and you can see it in every direction you look. From the sleek modern buildings set against the classic architecture, to the church that proudly stands out amidst the taller structures around it, this city has not only survived but also flourished as it transformed from the 'steel city' to what it is now.

• Teaching History through a Tour: Another major takeaway for me was how the tour guide Brian leveraged his background as a history teacher to present history in a really engaging and personable manner during the walking tour. It got me reflecting on this platform and how I've channeled my passion for history and teaching into discovering America through travel. He also brought up several times his vision for a more "vertical" city, where different neighborhoods and cultural areas are better connected. This was mainly about the city's design, which is incredibly walkable, yet sometimes felt a bit disconnected too.

Whenever I plan to travel independently, I often tell my parents, my friends and my family ahead of time. The reaction always tends to be mixed, but somewhat celebratory. I can’t say I blame them. Independent travel can be quite nerve-wracking for those who care about you. After all, you are venturing into unfamiliar territory all by yourself, with no one to rely on but yourself. In over a decade of traveling on my own as a man, it got me thinking about how men and women approach independent traveling, and the different perspectives both men and women have. While independent traveling can be fun and exhilarating for the participant, it's also challenging and can be quite scary - even for men. Lucky for you, i've gained valuable insights into what works and what doesn't. While there are plenty of resources available online for women to ensure their safety while traveling independently, and rightfully so, I have wondered what advice exists for men. How can men protect themselves while still enjoying their travel? I'll share my own ideas and also highlight the views of other men who travel independently.

Do Your Research Ahead of Time

For the past two decades, I have been working in the insurance industry, starting in claims and moving into an underwriting role in recent years. One key lesson I've learned in this field is the importance of managing and mitigating risk. When driving on the highway, even with all in the tech in our cars to prevent collisions, you still need to use your mirrors before moving into that center lane from the left lane. You wouldn't cross a lane unless it was safe to do so, so why travel to a destination without doing the research first? This is so important not only for navigating where you're going, but avoiding the crime infested areas. This goes for travel within the United States and all around the world.

It all starts with a purpose - why are you traveling? What do you want to see and do? No matter what you intend to do, men need to do their research and explore if this is an area right for them to visit. There's no shame in deciding against a destination or in favor of another destination. After all, traveling independently is about what you want to do.

• X and Pinterest are great places to start. You can follow me and/or other travel bloggers if you wish. Generally, you will find our reviews to be authentic and based on personal experience. We're also going to be honest with you and tell you where to go and where to avoid.

• When you settle on that particular destination you want to visit, start doing your research. Will you be flying or driving there? Where are you staying? How are you getting around? What activities do you want to do?

• Safety is paramount when you select a destination, so you will need to see how safe that area is. If it isn't safe, how does that accommodation protect its guests? What security measures are in place? You wouldn't buy a house without looking into crime scores, so why would you subject yourself to a destination that isn't safe?

One such research tool I use in my day job is Spotcrime. Simply type in where you are staying, and it will show you the crimes that occur in any given area. It's not meant to scare you, but it will prepare you (hey, that rhymes!). You can also download the app to your phone as well.

Keep an Eye on Travel Advisories and Alerts

Whether you’re embarking on a journey within the borders of the United States or venturing abroad, it is crucial to always be well-prepared. Travel advisories are regularly issued, providing important information about various parts of the world. These advisories are not solely related to criminal activities or unrest; they can also be prompted by recent weather events. That is why it is essential to stay informed by regularly checking the news and weather updates, especially in anticipation of any upcoming weather events.

Additionally, conducting thorough research about the destination you plan to visit is highly recommended. Different times of the year may offer more affordable options, but it is important to understand the underlying reasons behind these price variations. For instance, if you are considering a trip to Florida or the Gulf Coast in late August or early September, it is crucial to be cautious about potential hurricanes as it is the peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic. If you are planning to stay in a city, it is advisable to research the surrounding area, and Google Maps street view can be an invaluable tool in this regard.

When traveling to another country, it is essential to check for any travel advisories and stay updated with their news. By doing so, you can minimize the chances of unexpected surprises or the need to alter your plans at the last minute. I’ll give you an example, even during the pandemic, I managed to embark on a few independent trips. In my state, there were Covid guidelines that required residents to quarantine after visiting certain “high-risk” areas or states. However, by exercising caution and visiting lower-risk states, I was able to travel to Colorado, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania (specifically Pittsburgh) without the need for a two-week quarantine. Nevertheless, I remained vigilant and avoided close contact with others for a few days afterward, just to be safe. The key is to stay informed and adequately prepared for any situation that may arise.

Tracking While Traveling for Safety

I personally hate tracking, but I understand it’s a necessary evil. I use it when I absolutely need to, and will consider using it more with close friends and family. Otherwise, it’s what texting is for! If you’re more comfortable with it, there’s plenty of ways to loop in your family and friends, and may be excellent tools for you:

• FlightAware: This tracking tool is undoubtedly the most comfortable option I would choose, considering it provides access to public information. A few years ago, one of my friends introduced me to this website, and I have been relying on it ever since. The website offers a plethora of features, but its standout feature is the ability to track flights in real time. While having the flight number is ideal, you can also search for flights based on the departure and arrival airports. Additionally, you can search for flights by airline. As I mentioned earlier, being prepared is crucial, and FlightAware can help you anticipate airline delays by tracking the origin of the incoming plane. FlightAware also has a highly recommended app that I suggest for friends and family.

• Life360: This app is widely recognized and is compatible with both iPhone and Android phones. It allows you to easily track the whereabouts of your family or friends. In addition to identity theft protection and roadside assistance, it offers emergency assistance, phone tracking, and digital safety features. You have the option to choose between free or subscription-based services. This can be particularly beneficial for families with diverse phone models.

• If you’re an iPhone or Android family, you can turn on the “share my location” feature to share with select friends and family members. This is phone specific, and also does not work in all areas.

Blend In and Be Yourself

At my core, I would describe myself as an "extroverted introvert." but I genuinely enjoy connecting with others. A close friend of mine has witnessed my interactions during countless happy hours and trips, and he often expresses amazement at my natural talent for striking up conversations and putting people at ease. I’m not entirely sure how I manage it—perhaps it’s just part of who I am. I also have a knack for sensing people's intentions. If I get the impression that someone isn’t being genuine, I tend to keep my distance. It’s not meant to be rude; it’s simply a way for me to safeguard my own well-being. I share this not to brag, but to emphasize the importance of blending in and being yourself. I don’t actively seek out attention; I prefer to keep to myself and only engage when I feel compelled to. It’s all about being aware of your surroundings. I also know that not everyone is like me. While it’s great to be excited about a new place and advertise it to everyone, sometimes it’s best to hold back a bit.

BemusedBackpacker offers a humorous but perfect take on this:

Spot the backpacker? No that garish Hawaiian shirt or that Tiger Beer singlet you just bought is not the height of fashion, those board shorts are great for the beach but you are going to a fancy restaurant for crying out loud so put them away! I don’t care what that tout told you when he chased you down the street shouting ‘sir, sir, suit for you!’ You don’t look like god’s gift wearing that god awful T Shirt.

Sound harsh? Maybe. There’s nothing wrong with the odd beer branded vest top and shorts when you are relaxing on a tropical island somewhere, but wherever you go you should be mindful of the way you dress so as not to stand out and draw even more attention to yourself than you are already getting.

One of the best ways to stay safe is not to make yourself a target in the first place, and if you look like a typical tourist or backpacker and you stand out like a sore thumb, then you are going to have a huge tout target on your back whether you realise it or not. Those opportunistic thieves and muggers will think they have won the jackpot when they see you, assume you will have a ton of expensive gear and probably a lot of cash on you and will simply bide their time until they can relieve you of it all.

When you seamlessly integrate into your surroundings and carry on with your daily routine as you would in the comfort of your home, you avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself, and crucially, you won't appear as a potential target.

Use Credit Cards

Safeguarding your well-being extends to your financial health as well. Credit cards come with a distinct advantage over cash, offering a level of security that cash simply can't match. When you make a purchase using a credit card, you typically enjoy protection on all your transactions. Additionally, you can enhance your security with debit cards, travel insurance, and by keeping minimal cash on you. The reality is, in today's world, you really don't require as much cash as before.

HostelWorld offers a unique and random list of the other aspects men should be aware of, and among these - credit/debit cards and cash on hand are in mind:

You can’t guarantee you’ll avoid anything dangerous or dodgy, just like at home, but the fear is that, while travelling, you’re on the back foot. You can reduce your chances of getting involved in anything unpleasant.

Avoid confrontation and don’t swear at anyone – not even under your breath, not even if you’ve been overcharged by a taxi. Accept it as a loss. In the grand scheme of things, it probably isn’t that bad.

Know your landmarks – knowing where things are in relation to one another – and to your hostel – means you can keep your phone tucked away. Religious and government buildings are often signposted.

Have a couple of debit cards – if you lose one or it gets stolen, you’ve got a backup. Keep them in separate places – like one in your big backpack, one in your daypack.

Keep important things hidden away – pockets can soon be picked. Keep your passport, emergency cards and spare cash hidden away (but always within reach).

Get travel insurance – even if you get in a spot of bother – if your bag’s stolen, or you get horrendous travel trots – it means you’ve got a way out or a way home.

Book ahead – if you’re travelling from one city to another, have a room or bed booked for your arrival, and head there first. Settle yourself in, then explore.

Have some money spare – easier said than done, but keeping some money to one side can act as an emergency fund. If you’ve got a one-way ticket somewhere, make sure you’ve got enough for a one-way ticket back home, too.

Be nice, get some travel insurance, and use your debit and/or credit card. Simple enough!

It’s Not a Long Way to the Top, But It Is Rough

Ascending the main hiking trail of Talcott Mountain is a remarkable challenge for your endurance. I exercise five times a week, and this hike demands a certain level of fitness as a starting point. Although the elevation gain is less than 1,000 feet above sea level, the steepness of the ascent makes it the toughest section on the way to the tower. Fortunately, there are benches along the way where you can pause and rest. It’s crucial to bring a water bottle, dress in comfortable attire, and wear a good pair of hiking shoes or even sneakers for this leg of the trek. The rewards are plentiful and keep coming as you progress. Just keep pushing upward. The entire ascent without breaks takes roughly 10 minutes, but I highly suggest taking breaks every now and then.

Charles Hayes writes about this park in FamilyDestinationsGuide, in the article entitled “The Fascinating State Park In Connecticut You’ve Probably Never Heard Of”, which goes into detail on Talcott Mountain’s history and summarizes the park perfectly:

The traprock ridge stretches for miles, creating a distinctive spine through central Connecticut that’s visible from surprising distances. It’s part of the Metacomet Ridge, which sounds like something from a fantasy novel but is actually a 100+ mile geological formation running from New Haven, Connecticut, all the way up to the Massachusetts-Vermont border. The ridge formed around 200 million years ago when dinosaurs were still the hot new trend in evolution. Volcanic activity pushed molten rock through cracks in the earth’s surface, which then cooled and hardened into the basalt that makes up the mountain today. That’s right – you’re hiking on ancient lava flows, which is objectively cool no matter how outdoorsy you consider yourself. The park itself was established as a state park in the 1960s, but the area’s history as a recreation destination goes back much further.

As you reach the summit, the first thing you’ll notice is the stunning views of Western Connecticut that stretch out before you, especially on a clear day. While the temperature might not shift much since you’re only 1,000 feet up, the scenery will definitely make you pause and take it all in. I’ve hiked this trail multiple times, and the view always makes me stop and look out. The walk along the mountain ridge to the tower will take about another 30 minutes, leading you through some serene and peaceful woods.

The Final Climb to The Heublien Tower

Before we go into the climb to the Heublein Tower, let’s dive into the history of the Heublein Tower, and its inhabitants.

Towers Rise, Fall, and Rise Again…

The story of the tower is really interesting since it’s actually the fourth one built on this spot, and the fifth built overall. The first tower was put up by Daniel Wadsworth, who founded the Wadsworth Atheneum art museum in downtown Hartford. This initial tower was wooden, reaching a height of 55 feet, but it was blown down during a windstorm in 1840. Then, Mr. Wadsworth built a second tower that was 10 feet taller and secured to the mountain with steel cables, but it was destroyed by fire in 1864. After that, Matthew Bartlett constructed a third tower, and a fourth one was built in 1889, which also ended up being lost in a fire in 1936. All these towers were located next to or on the site of the current tower that still stands today. This current tower was built in 1912 and finished in 1914. It stands at 165 feet tall and is designed to endure winds of up to 100 mph, featuring concrete reinforced with 12-inch iron girders that are anchored into the mountain’s bedrock.

Meet The Heubleins

Andrew Heublein made the significant decision to emigrate from Germany, bringing his family to the United States where they settled in Connecticut in 1859. There, he embarked on the ambitious venture of establishing a hotel, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving family business. His sons became integral to this enterprise, contributing their skills and energy to its growth. Over time, the business evolved, particularly under the guidance of his sons Louis and Gilbert, who inventively expanded their offerings to include canned cocktails.

In the article “The Intoxicating History of the Canned Cocktail”, Smithsonian Magazine details how the Heublein boys would take the family business to the next level:

But it was Andrew’s sons, Gilbert and Louis, who turned the Heublein brand into a national enterprise—designing labels, getting distribution, building a brand and inspiring competitors. Club Cocktails were advertised with campaigns like “A better cocktail at home than is served over any Bar in the world.”

As Heubelin’s business thrived, Gilbert Heublein, while trekking up Talcott Mountain, assured his fiancée of a “castle on the mountain”—a promise he fulfilled. The Friends of Heublein Tower elaborate on the various purposes of the tower:

Used mainly as a summer retreat from the city, the Tower was a gracious, comfortable spot, 1,000 feet above the Farmington River Valley. It featured a six-story tower with a luxurious bedroom or living area on each floor and boasted the first residential elevator in Connecticut. On the top floor was a ‘ballroom’, now known as the Observation Deck, where the Heubleins hosted parties and entertained their many house guests. The addition of staff rooms, a dining room, a larger kitchen, and service areas was completed in 1929.

In 1943, the tower was sold to the Hartford Times, six years following Gilbert’s passing. It was then transformed into a venue for parties and social events for the Hartford Times newspaper and its broadcast operations. In 1962, it was sold to a developer who planned to convert the tower into a restaurant with apartments along Talcott Mountain Ridge. This led local residents to establish an organization aimed at halting the development, which, combined with the state of Connecticut’s acquisition of the tower and its surrounding land for conservation in 1966, changed the course of its future. The tower underwent a meticulous restoration that was completed in 1974, reopening to the public that same year and has remained accessible ever since.

Let’s Go Up the Heublein Tower

During the season, visitors can walk through and discover the tower. While many just head straight to the top, there's a ton of interesting stuff to discover about the tower as you make your way up.

As you enter, turn left and you’ll find the living room. Behind the glass displays, there are various preserved pieces of furniture and artifacts.

As you ascend the stairs to the observation deck, pause for a moment to admire the bedrooms lining your path. To your right, you will find Louise’s bedroom. Just beyond that, as you turn to keep climbing, you’ll come across the Sleeping Porch followed by Gilbert’s boyhood bedroom.

As you make your way up, take a moment to stop in the corporate room, where a wide array of artifacts and signage related to Heublein’s ventures await your exploration. Among these fascinating elements is the tale of the Moscow Mule cocktail, co-created by John G Martin, bartender Wes Prince, and Jack Morgan, the owner of Cock N Bull. This partnership was primarily focused on assisting Mr. Martin, who was leading Heublein Corporation at the time, in promoting Smirnoff Vodka to American consumers, following his company’s acquisition of the brand's American distribution rights. In 1896, the Heublein family introduced and marketed A1 Steak Sauce, which became their primary source of income during Prohibition. Furthermore, you will discover photographs and artifacts that highlight the various businesses they owned and operated over the years, including Kentucky Fried Chicken, which joined Heublein in the early 1970s - a “finger licking good” entry indeed!

Keep climbing, and you’ll reach the top of the tower, where you can walk along the indoor observation deck. This enclosed space protects you from wind and insects while you enjoy the view. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to spectacular sights of the Downtown Hartford skyline, the Springfield skyline, Bradley International Airport, and the beautiful mountains and hills of Massachusetts to the north, along with New York to the west and south. It’s a stunning panorama that never fails to impress.

Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Barbecue Pit

As you make your way down the tower and step outside, pause to take in your surroundings. You’ll see the concrete staircase leading you down to the sheltered cliff, providing a panoramic view that extends for miles. If you turn left, you’ll find a peaceful pavilion with various areas to unwind and appreciate the landscape, as well as a few picnic tables for those looking to take a break or enjoy a picnic lunch.

Look past the picnic tables, and you’ll see the Eisenhower Barbecue Pit tucked away in the corner. The renowned five-star WWII General and President has a meaningful connection to the tower, having participated in an event in May 1950 organized by the publisher of The Hartford Times, who is also the tower’s owner (now referred to as the Times Tower).

Friends of the Heublein Tower dives deeper into this historical link at the tower:

At the celebratory picnic at the Tower, a group of prominent local Republicans asked Eisenhower to consider running for the Presidency of the United States in the upcoming 1952 election. This group was led by Prescott Bush, a businessman from Greenwich, Connecticut who became a Senator in 1952 and whose son and grandson are the Presidents Bush. Eisenhower was sitting in the blue leather and wood chair (currently in the Tower’s living room) when they asked him to run for the presidency.

The Barbecue Pit is a building that was put up for the picnic/sheep roast that was held for the opening of the Murphy Terminal at Bradley International Airport in 1950.

When Should You Visit Talcott Mountain State Park and the Heublein Tower?

Connecticut experiences four seasons, so here are some times to visit and some times to avoid:

• January-March: Given that snow typically blankets the ground during this season, navigating the area will be challenging. Additionally, the Heublein Tower is currently closed. Only experienced hikers should attempt the steep ascent at this time, and that’s contingent on the park being open. The days are also shorter now, with sunsets occurring between 4:30 PM and 6 PM ET. While March usually sees a reduction in snow cover, it also brings muddy conditions.

• April-June: As the year progresses, the weather begins to get better, featuring a mix of warmer and cooler days. Additionally, the days grow longer. I suggest planning your visit around Memorial Day (late May and June) when you can enjoy mostly delightful temperatures and the Heublein Tower is completely accessible.

• July-September: The Heublein Tower and its surrounding park are currently open to the public, making this a prime time for visitors. However, keep in mind that July and August bring the highest levels of summer heat and humidity. If possible, I suggest planning your visit for the early morning during these months. Alternatively, September usually offers more comfortable weather and tends to be less busy.

• October-December: October is the ideal month for a visit, as the temperatures begin to drop, and the Heublein Tower remains accessible throughout the month. If you plan to visit in November or December, be ready for even cooler weather, and note that the tower will be closed during this period. Additionally, snowfall is frequent in December, so like the months of January to March, it’s best to avoid this time unless you’re an experienced hiker.

This state park attracts both locals and tourists during the season, making parking a bit tricky. The ideal times to visit are in the morning or early evening throughout the peak summer months, although the park is accessible from 8am until sunset. If parking near the entrance is unavailable, you may need to park either up the hill or along the road. You can park on the grass since there isn’t a specific parking lot.

The optimal times to visit are during the shoulder seasons of mid to late Spring and early to mid Fall. The Heublein Tower typically welcomes visitors from late May to early September, with the best visiting times being the initial weeks of the season from late May to mid-June and the final weeks of the season in September and October, as the weather tends to be much more enjoyable.

Things to Do Near the Talcott Mountain State Park

With its location in the Farmington Valley, it is within driving distance to numerous other area attractions:

Where to Stay Near the Talcott Mountain State Park

A Morning Drive through a Drive-Thru Safari

We've all heard about drive-thrus and probably used one at least once in our lives. They're great for grabbing food on the go, like that breakfast sandwich you've been wanting, a late-night snack, or even a latte. You can also use a drive-thru to quickly wash your car. Need to do some banking? You can handle deposits or withdrawals through a drive-thru too. Plus, you can pick up your prescriptions without leaving your car. But what if I told you that this specific drive-thru can turn your car, or even a rental, into your very own safari vehicle? Just stay inside, drive slowly and carefully along the trail, and you'll get to see animals from all around the globe. Expect to spot timber wolves, arctic wolves, bobcats, bears, goats, bison, and so much more. Once you're done driving through, you can walk around and get up close (but safely) with a variety of wild animals. Bearizona is truly an unforgettable experience.

The Road Trip Up North

Before I hit the road as part of my prep, I checked the weather and saw it was going to be pretty chilly, so I knew I had to bundle up but also be ready to peel off some layers as the day warmed up while heading north and then south. I planned to drive north, leaving early in the morning when it was a brisk 53 degrees Fahrenheit in Scottsdale on a late February morning. After grabbing some breakfast, I set off north on Interstate 17 towards Williams, Arizona. I clearly remember the landscape undulating a lot, with palm trees gradually disappearing and giving way to mountain views, cooler temperatures (with some snow on the ground), and a shifting scenery. When I arrived in Williams around mid-morning, it was a cold but sunny 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Why such a big drop in temperature? Well, Williams sits at about 6,916 feet above sea level, while Scottsdale is only around 1,500 feet up.

Start with the Drive-Thru Safari at Bearizona

I proceeded to enter Bearizona through its magnificent rock gate, where you will approach a tunnel. I rolled down my driver side window to chat with the admission staff, who explained the fee and the park's rules. You can also find the rules posted around the park. Simply put, keep your windows and doors closed at all times, drive slowly, be respectful of the animals and you'll be fine. I always live by the idea that animals are more scared of humans than the other way around.

Once you move through the tunnel, you'll encounter Rocky Mountain goats, reindeer (shh, don't tell Santa Claus!), tundra wolves, arctic wolves, black bears, bison, and bighorn sheep. Navigating the trail can be somewhat nerve-wracking, as you must drive cautiously while the animals wander freely. I recall when I got close to the bison; several were blocking the road, and the only option was to maneuver around them slowly and carefully. Also, be ready to stop if you're in a line of vehicles behind others.

This experience was really fascinating, stunning, and a tad nerve-wracking for me. I felt a bit anxious since I was behind the wheel of a rental car, and while I try to be as respectful as possible, you can't really control what others do behind the wheel of their respective vehicles, which comes with its own risks. But the payoff is getting to see these amazing creatures in their natural environment, in a spacious habitat where they're well cared for, have plenty of room to roam, and can be free, all while being monitored for the safety of both the guests and the animals.

Finish with a Walk-Thru at Bearizona

After doing a few loops around the drive-thru safari, I decided to check out the "walk-thru" portion, which features grizzly bears, bobcats, foxes and badgers. Walking in to the walk-thru area, you will see numerous signs directing you to the various animals you can see. You can also order food, beverages and see shows involving the respective animals and their handlers in the "central park" area. As my visit was in the late-winter, part of the park was closed for some renovations, so unfortunately I couldn't see Otter Mountain, or any of the exhibits on the east side of the entrance. However, I was able to see the bobcats, grizzy bears, foxes and badgers.

The enclosures for the respective animals appeared to be spacious and they appeared to be well-taken care of. I was fascinated with watching the grizzly bears and seeing how peaceful they were, and playful they were with their handler, but they are kept behind a fence for a reason. I was also fascinated with the bobcats as well. This portion is a terrific spot as you will get to see the animals up close but have some form of protection in between them and you at the same time. The walk-through experience is great for everyone, especially for those without a vehicle! If you're concerned about the 'drive-thru safari,' this serves as an ideal substitute.

What Should You Do First?

To be honest, I don't think you could go wrong either way if you were to start with the drive-thru safari, or the walk thru at Bearizona. If you're taking the drive from Scottsdale, it probably wouldn't hurt to have an opportunity to stretch your legs if you haven't already done so as it an almost 3 hour drive up. However, I made it a point to stop a few times on the way up to stretch my legs and get coffee, or even pick up some souvenirs! After all, travel isn't always about sticking to an itinerary - take in the experience, breathe it in and enjoy it. You may never get an experience like this again.

An Afternoon in Sedona

Sedona is frequently mentioned as a must-see destination in the American Southwest, and for good reason. This town is renowned for its stunning scenery, encircled by magnificent red rock formations and a distinctly Native American atmosphere. After enjoying my morning at Bearizona, I embarked on an hour-long journey to Sedona, beginning on Interstate 40 East, briefly merging onto Interstate 17 South, and then taking Exit 337 to connect with State Route 89A. The drive was truly remarkable!

This breathtaking drive encourages you to relax as you are surrounded by stunning views. After a smooth section, you'll encounter the winding Oak Creek Vista road that descends into the canyon. Just a word of caution, this road can be challenging at times, so choose a nice day for your trip. However, the views are truly unmatched. I wanted to take more pictures, but I had to be cautious. There are numerous picturesque spots where you can pause and enjoy the scenery, and trust me, every stop is worthwhile as you navigate through this canyon. It was the perfect preview for the main attraction that awaited me in Sedona.

Parking in Sedona

Sedona is a small, walkable city with plenty of parking options around. I parked at the Wayside Chapel Lot located at 425 Mountain View Dr, Sedona, AZ. You might find that Sedona's popularity can make parking a bit tricky, and that day was no different. Even on a weekday, right in the middle of the day, I managed to snag one of the last available spots in that lot. There are other parking lots nearby too. Sedona has created walkways connecting the main tourist area to these nearby lots, making it easy for visitors to get to the heart of the town. My walkway was brief but offered such a lovely view of the town at the end.

Grab Lunch at Open Range Grill and Tavern

After spending the morning with the animals at Bearizona, and navigating my way into town through the incredibly scenic drive, I was famished and needed a quick stop for lunch. The Open Range Grill and Tavern on 320 N State Rte 89A in Sedona, AZ came highly recommended after doing some quick research on Google Maps, so I stopped in. Their menu is extensive, featuring steaks, tacos, salads, burgers, wraps and much more. As you can see in the photo below, i'm a simple man. Just give me a beer, a good turkey wrap and some fries and i'm happy. Food was good, and if you can get a seat in the restaurant area where you'll get that view, it's worth it. Unfortunately, yours truly had a hard time getting that seat, so a bar seat will do!

Sip a Glass of Wine at Winery 1912

The overall perception Arizona and wine might not be a well known mix when it comes to wine, but according to the Winery 1912 website, winemaking in Arizona dates back to 1690!

Arizona wine may be new to some, but has a rich history in this challenging terrain that is older than the state itself. Jesuit priests brought the first Vinifera to Arizona around 1690. Today, Arizona’s largest & most diverse vineyard, Dragoon Mountain Vineyard thrives in Southeast Arizona.

Surrounded by a nearly perfect ring of five distinct mountain ranges in what is referred to scientifically as a caldera, 59 soil types define this growing region. Very hot, dry desert days make the wine grapes struggle to become their best and cool night allow the grapes to rest and retain the perfect acidity.  This preserves the delicious, natural flavors and characteristics of the grapes that will make some of the finest wines in the world. 

After nearly a four year research and application process, Willcox was recognized bt the Federal Government as an exceptional growing region and awarded the distinction of being a unique American Viticultural Area. 

Winery 1912 affords a cozy, relaxed space for you to sip some great red wine (or white wine) and take in the glorious red rocks of Sedona. The wine is terrific and the views are hard to beat!

Take in the Scenery and Walk Around Sedona

Unfortunately, my first visit to Sedona was short, but I definitely plan to come back. The breathtaking views of the red rock formations, the relaxed atmosphere, and the numerous free or low-cost activities I discovered while exploring Sedona make it a destination worth revisiting. You can easily join a local guided tour, or simply pull over during your journey, step out of your car, and take in the stunning scenery of this incredible place. While there are some 'tourist trap shops'—which is common in such towns—if you can avoid them or limit your visits, you should have a great experience. Moreover, there are many state parks nearby, making a trip truly rewarding—even if it's just for a couple of days.

Milwaukee's dynamic cultural landscape is deeply influenced by its rich history, vibrant present, and promising future, particularly showcased in its diverse food and beer offerings. The city has a strong brewing legacy, highlighted by iconic figures like Captain Pabst and Frederic Miller, who helped establish Milwaukee's renowned beer culture. The culinary scene also reflects a mix of traditions. You can indulge in a selection of Belgian beers at the charming Cafe Benelux in the Historic Third Ward, and raise a hearty mug of German pilsner at the Bavarian Bierhaus, among many other delightful options. Join me as we delve into the delicious world of Milwaukee's brews and food.

Be Your Own Bartender at the 3rd Street Market Hall

This is an excellent illustration of a well-executed food hall. Food halls serve as an ideal choice for various travelers, as they typically feature a wider array of dining options along with entertainment and retail offerings. This particular venue boasts 19 vendors, primarily focused on food but also providing merchandise. Guests can enjoy a bourbon bar, a self-serve area for beer and wine taps, as well as spaces dedicated to arcade and video games, darts, and board games. The culinary selections are impressively diverse, ranging from seafood and sushi to tacos, Vietnamese cuisine, hot dogs, burgers, milkshakes, baked treats, and much more. The food options change all the time, so check the website for details.

In this self-serve taproom, you have the freedom to choose between small or large pours, and you can even mix and match different beers to create your perfect tasting experience. Many of these establishments also offer a selection of wine and cider, catering to a variety of preferences. During my visit in October, the menu was heavily influenced by Oktoberfest beers, which were the stars of the show at City Fountain. I decided to try a combination of a classic Oktoberfest and a remarkable barrel-aged version, and it turned out to be an exceptional choice for my lunch. While I enjoyed my meal, I walked around the city, and I highly recommend this approach if you plan to savor the delightful beers available on the wall!

Sip On Belgian Beers at Cafe Benelux

I am a huge fan of Belgian beers. In fact, it’s the only type of beer that keeps me interested in beers these days. Belgian brewers are known for their use of a wide array of malts, which create rich and complex flavors that can include notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and roasted elements. The distinctive Belgian yeast strains play a crucial role as well, producing a range of fruity and spicy esters and phenols during fermentation, which contribute to the unique aromas and flavors associated with these beers. Common flavor profiles feature hints of banana, clove, and even pepper or bubblegum, varying significantly across different styles. I also find the atmosphere of Belgian breweries in America to be appealing, characterized by a dark yet inviting ambiance. So, while I was walking through Milwaukee Public Market, I stumbled upon a beer bar that doubles as a restaurant, serving fantastic Belgian brews. Although there’s a rooftop area, I chose to enjoy my experience inside. I opted for a Tasting Kourier, sampling four draft beers, with plans to select my favorite for a full pour afterward.

• Theresa Tripel Blonde (Van Steenberg): The menu referred to this as a “foodie beer” but all I’ll say about it was that it was quite drinkable and definitely had some banana flavor to it.

• Kwak Blonde (Bosteels): Nice blend of coriander and banana in this one

• Delirium Tremens (Huygue): This is a big, big favorite of mine. There’s definite Apple and honey flavors mixed in and it’s delicious

• Tripel Van De Garre (Van Steenberg): Known for its three times the malt, but not much more to this. The weakest of the bunch, but still not bad. 

Ok, so three out of the four are hits...

Which one am I going with for a full pour….

And the winner is…

None of them!

I decided to go with the St Bernardus ABT 12, and yes, it was delicious.

Awesome and attentive staff, and a terrific Belgian beer list and accompanying atmosphere.

Have Barbecue at Smoke Shack

I opted for the half-pound brisket accompanied by coleslaw and broccoli slaw as sides, and my experience was somewhat mixed. While I didn't find it unpleasant, it also didn't leave a lasting impression. The brisket had a pleasantly tender, buttery texture, particularly in the fatty sections, yet it lacked depth of flavor beyond the outer crust and the fat itself. On the positive side, the brisket was juicy enough to enjoy without any sauces, although the addition of sauces certainly elevated the overall taste. The coleslaw and broccoli slaw were delightful, offering a balanced flavor profile that was neither overwhelming nor bland. To complement my meal, I chose a "Smokey Old Fashioned," which featured a subtle smokiness and was otherwise a well-crafted cocktail. The attentive and friendly service from the staff, including the young bartender, added a positive touch to the evening.

Eat at the Zocalo Food Park

Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that catch you by surprise, and this was definitely one of those moments for me. Located in the historic Walkers Point district, this delightful food truck park boasts around seven diverse food trucks, along with a full-service bar and inviting picnic tables that are perfect for enjoying a meal. This venue truly captures the spirit of a food truck park, making it an ideal destination for all types of visitors, particularly those on a budget. The food offerings are impressively diverse, featuring everything from delicious burgers and fresh bagels to tempting Venezuelan and Puerto Rican dishes, as well as a truck specializing in ramen and sushi. I chose tacos (because who doesn't like tacos) and they were delicious! It was light but incredibly tasty!

Take a Tour at Great Lakes Distillery

I arrived about 30 minutes early, so I decided to kick things off with a bourbon old fashioned while I waited for the tour to begin. Our bartender and tour guide, Kaylan (I hope I spelled her name correctly!), was full of energy and had a vibrant personality, along with a colorful vocabulary that could make a sailor blush. Her storytelling about their small batch process was incredibly entertaining. The tour definitely had an R-rated feel when it came to language, but honestly, I had a fantastic time and enjoyed every moment!

After learning about their spirit-making process, we headed to the back of the distillery for some tastings. I ended up with a blended whiskey and a cool t-shirt to take home, and she even included a complimentary drink and some discounts on merchandise, which was a nice touch. You can really tell when a distillery is doing things right. She also mentioned they’re working on a scotch that should be released soon, which I was excited to hear. Overall, it was an amazing tour—not exactly kid-friendly, but hey, it’s vacation, right?

Visit a German Beer Hall at Bavarian Bierhaus

I have a strong appreciation for genuine German beer halls, and this place certainly lived up to my expectations. On a relatively quiet Friday night, I found myself seated at the bar, soaking in the warm, inviting atmosphere that is characteristic of these great German beer halls, enjoying a generous liter of the house Hefeweizen, a personal favorite of mine known for its cloudy appearance and refreshing taste. As I was enjoying the refreshing beer, I chose a hearty dinner featuring two types of sausage—Nürnberger and Oktoberfest—paired with red cabbage and spätzle, which I specifically requested as my sides. Growing up in a household that blended Italian and German culinary traditions, my father greatly influenced my love for spätzle and German cuisine in general, and this venue provided a delightful experience. However, as the evening went on and the crowd grew, the service did decline a bit, which was a minor drawback to an otherwise enjoyable night.

Why Milwaukee's Brews and Food are Essential to Milwaukee

Milwaukee's food and booze scene serves as a continuous homage to the city's rich heritage, deeply intertwined with its geographical features. The network of bridges that spans the area has historically facilitated the growth of various industries which attracted waves of immigrants, each contributing their unique cultural influences, which have become integral to the very fabric of Milwaukee's identity. German immigrants, in particular, played a pivotal role in shaping the local beer culture, establishing iconic breweries that still stand today. In addition to the breweries, Milwaukee's culinary landscape has evolved to include a wide array of restaurants, food markets, and artisanal producers that reflect the city's multicultural heritage. Van Gogh and Big Cats in Spokane & Drinks at the Lake in Coeur D'Alene

We spent the weekend in Spokane, Washington, where I got to see her home town. It was not the easiest destination to visit. My Southwest flight had not one but TWO stops both ways, but no real delays and no real issues with the flights. My stops were specifically spread out across the country, with a stop in Baltimore and a stop in Denver on the way. However, I didn't mind this so much as it broke up the sitting on the plane. Once I arrived, I picked up the rental car, headed to my hotel and then her apartment. Spokane is a not a bad little city, it has its problems, definitely has some homeless people walking around and some very rough areas, but it's a city that seems like it's finding its footing. It's a small city, very walkable downtown with concert venues, restaurants, bars, breweries, a mall and some legendary hotels. For the weekend and first part, I stayed at the Davenport Tower. I don't have enough material to do a review, but I found this hotel to be very welcoming for an independent traveler.

The weekend in Spokane was mostly limited to a visit to the great Cat Tails Wildlife Center, where we saw tigers, bobcats, lynx's, mountain lions, wolfdogs, raccoons and foxes. It was fascinating and relaxing to see these animals in small habitats where they are well cared for, and respected. We then visited some local breweries and tap rooms in town after. On the next day, we attended the traveling Van Gogh Experience exhibit. I HIGHLY recommend this the next time it is in your town, especially the immersive experience and the virtual reality exhibit. It's very much worth the ticket price! On that same day, we went out to the gorgeous Lake Coeur D'Alene, just over the border in Idaho. What a beautiful lake, it's a massive lake with mountains in the background. It's everything I could possibly want in a lake setting, I would honestly consider moving there just to have that view in the morning, just need to win the lottery first!

The Road Trip Through The Center of the Universe to Montana

After our weekend, we took a road trip to Montana. We made a pit stop in Wallace, Idaho (also known as The Center of the Universe). We visited a local brewery, and had lunch at this wonderful place called The Fainting Goat. After our pit stop, we continued onto Montana. I have never seen scenery like this, even on a rainy day. These are MOUNTAINS! I remember constantly going "wow" as I was moving through Interstate 90, the scenery alone is worth the trip. You will need to be a confident and excellent driver, there's lots of curves and twists and you'll get locked into the scenery but it's worth it and made the full 3 hour drive that impressive.

As we were approaching Missoula, Montana, you will see a large ranch with numerous hay bales (including one drawn like Oscar The Grouch!), and most of all, you will see mountains that line the city. One specific mountain, Mount Sentinel, that houses the famous M symbol on the mountain in honor of the University of Montana - which is located in the city. If you wanted to dare yourself, you could hike in a zigzag pattern up the mountain to reach the M, but it's not for the faint of heart. Neither one of us would be considering that! As we we're in the heart of wildfire season, we had to be careful. I also picked up a bad bout of allergies. One such lesson I learned was to look for allergy medication when you visit a different part of the country you are not used to, even if you don't use it. There's so much different fauna and vegetation you may not be used to, and for me, not being able to sleep well one of the nights was the impetus to land some good allergy meds!

Exploring Montana in Missoula

On our first day in Montana, it was a rainy day so we visited the Montana Natural History Center, and the Missoula Art Museum. The Natural History Museum was fascinating, and we learned about the animals and natural history of the area. In fact, did you know that Missoula Valley was essentially one big glacial lake?! However, I found the art museum to be depressing and disappointing with very few art exhibits, and exhibits that depressed rather than uplifted.

Finding a Hidden Gem When Plans Need to Change

On the second day in Montana, we had originally planned to visit Seeley Lake about 90 minutes away, which included a waterfall and some hiking. Remember how I mentioned there was rain the day before? Well, that included some thunderstorms in the area at the time that hit the mountains, and the lightning hit ALL of the mountains in the area so there was a lot of wildfires going that day, which caused us to make a last minute change to find something more close by.

Thankfully we did, we found the fantastic Travelers' Rest State Park, just 30 minutes south of Missoula. It was actually a campsite for the Lewis and Clark expedition and part of the trail that made up Lewis and Clark's journey out west. There's a small indoor history museum that explains Lewis and Clark's journey with artifacts, maps and visual materials. Outside, and especially on a beautiful late summer day like this one, we explored the back trails stopping by the see the creek, spotted some deer nearby and take in the glorious views of the nearby mountains. As someone who is from New England, we don't have views like this and I enjoyed it immensely.

The Food and Booze of Missoula

For food and drink, we had our top stops. On the first night, we finally agreed on stopping at the Missoula Club. It's a hole in the wall bar and restaurant, with slot machines in the background (this was EVERYWHERE in Montana!) and they served only burgers, shakes, and had a full service bar with liquors and beer. We ended up getting a burger each, and it was by far one of the best burgers I have EVER had (and I eat a LOT of burgers). It was a simple burger too, just two smash patties, American cheese, onions and pickles. We were convinced it was entirely the burger seasoning, which made the burger taste so good, but who knows. We had burgers again at Gary's $6 Burgers the next day, a long standing food truck in town, and it was fine but wasn't the same. We also made a trip to the Montgomery Distillery where we sampled some of their wonderful cocktails including mint julep that was out of this world! Tamarack Brewing Company had some terrific food and happy hour specials as well. We also walked around the beautiful Caras Park, a park in tribute to a local businessman of Greek ancestry who was instrumental in the establishment of Missoula. Driving back, we stopped at St Regis Travel Center, which is a gas station and general store that made some pretty good milkshakes. I had the Huckleberry Milkshake, because it's the pacific northwest and it's a big deal there! We made our final stop of the trip at the Fainting Goat Restaurant, once again in Wallace, Idaho.

Where We Stayed: VRBO Vacation Rental in Missoula

My friend and I made the decision to share a living space, opting for separate bedrooms and bathrooms while sharing the kitchen and living room. We were not interested in staying at a hotel; we wanted a place that felt like home. The only platform I considered for our search was Vrbo, where I discovered a fantastic vacation rental located in a peaceful residential area on the other side of the city. The rental was a stunning, likely newly built house featuring a small driveway and a breezeway entrance that led both upstairs and downstairs. I chose to stay on the lower level, which included my own bedroom and bathroom complete with a shower. My friend occupied the upper level, where she also had her own bedroom and bathroom. The middle section of the house had a cozy TV room with a couch, while the lower part of that section housed the kitchen, dining table, and chairs, along with a fireplace. Since it was summer, a portable air conditioner was set up in the living room. We were thrilled with our choice, and neither of us wanted to leave when our trip came to an end. Although there was no exercise room, the amount of walking we did made it unnecessary.

I would share the address or the stay details, but unfortunately, that property is no longer available for rent on Vrbo, which is disappointing.

I highly recommend Daniel Catena's Itchy Feet Newsletter, which offers a list of "7 Questions Before Traveling With Another Person", and this list should really be considered whenever you decide to go on a road trip with a friend. Road trips with friends can go either way, it could bring you closer together or split you apart. As this was my second road trip with my friend in two years, we enjoyed each other's company but also had plenty of time to ourselves as well. We had our difficult moments, but in the end, neither one of us wanted the week to end. That's how a road trip should be.

Growing up in the 1990s in western New England, I found myself surrounded by three professional football teams: the New England Patriots, the New York Giants, and the New York Jets. This was before Tom Brady's legendary era with the Patriots. Eli Manning, who was my age, was still finding his footing and hadn’t yet made his mark with the Giants. As for the Jets, they always seemed to trip over themselves (and I was quite correct about that!). None of these teams really captured my interest. You could say I was a "sports fan free agent," free to choose whichever team I wanted to support. It was during this time that a football team from a small Midwestern city with green and gold colors grabbed my attention. Every Sunday, a small rust belt city in the icy upper Midwest came together to support this team - win or lose. Through weekly national television broadcasts, I became captivated and intrigued by their rich history. I had always dreamed of visiting Green Bay and seeing a Packers game at Lambeau Field, and finally I got the chance. Traveling to see your favorite sports team, whether with friends or on a solo trip, is a wonderful way to explore, and I decided to take my own advice! So, in May of 2024, I patiently waited for the NFL Schedule Release and I picked a date, I set my sights on an early October Sunday in 2024 where they would be playing the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field. I booked and paid for a package through Sports Traveler that included hotel, transportation, tickets to the game and a next day tour of Lambeau Field. How I Made My Gameplan for Attending a Packers Game

The notion of attending a Packers game has been on my mind for several years, but it always seemed to slip through my fingers. Most sports leagues typically announce their schedules well ahead of time. NASCAR and Major League Baseball often unveil the upcoming season's schedule while the current one is still in progress. The National Football League, however, has turned the schedule release into a spectacle, usually revealing it just a few months in advance, which keeps fans in suspense. Knowing the schedule is crucial because it allows fans to anticipate matchups and the specific Sundays when games will take place. With only one game each week, this information is vital. Each time I considered going to a game, it wouldn’t cross my mind until September, by which point I had already organized and budgeted for my late-year trip between October and early December. When the schedule was released in May 2024, I began researching sports travel companies. I have had mixed to positive experiences with these companies during my annual NASCAR trips with friends. I ultimately chose Sports Traveler, which collaborates with several NFL teams, including the Green Bay Packers. I opted for a package that featured a two-night stay in a single-occupancy room at the Oneida Casino Hotel in Green Bay, daily breakfast buffet, round-trip coach bus transportation to the game, a ticket to the game, and a tour of Lambeau Field the following day. Additionally, I included travel insurance in the package for peace of mind, given that I was prepaying for the event. The total cost for this experience came to $1,370.00, with my only obligation being to cover the flight expenses. I also planned a quick visit to nearby Milwaukee, just a two-hour drive away, to enhance the experience.

Taking the Road Trip from Milwaukee to Green Bay

On a chilly, rainy October Saturday afternoon, I made my way from Milwaukee in a rental car. I arrived at the Oneida Casino Hotel, located at the edge of the Oneida reservation and directly across from the airport. After checking in at the front desk, I entered my room, which I found to be quite clean and comfortable. I recorded a brief video of the room, as seen below:

Once I settled in, I headed to the casino to try my luck at the slot machines. The casino felt a bit cramped, and the presence of a wedding party added to the crowd, especially with the Packers game happening the next day. I chose a slot machine, inserted $40, and after a few spins, I hit a big win of $260! Since I'm not an avid gambler, I decided to cash out and take my winnings. I then drove into town and discovered a decent cocktail bar nearby, where I enjoyed a glass of wine and a light dinner. It was nothing extravagant; I just wanted to unwind after a long day of travel. Green Bay is what you would expect from a small Midwestern rust-belt city, featuring a modest downtown area with museums and activities. However, on this particular Saturday night, it felt rather quiet, perhaps due to the chilly rain affecting the atmosphere.

My Gameday Morning Experience

After enjoying a delightful breakfast buffet at the hotel, I settled in to wait for the shuttle, which ran every 30 minutes starting three hours before the game. Even at 9:30 AM, the shuttle was already crowded. They provide shuttles for other hotel guests for an $8 fee, but it's definitely worth it to bypass the traffic around the stadium. The shuttles pick up right by the hotel entrance, and my package included a voucher for transportation to the stadium area. From there, I would board the coach bus shuttle that would take us to our stop near Lambeau Field. The bus was filled with Packers fans from various regions, along with a few from farther away. During the ride to Lambeau Field, I struck up a fantastic conversation with a fellow Green Bay Packers fan from North Dakota who was sitting next to me, which led to a lively chat with other fans from California in the seats ahead of us. This bus was a true melting pot of Packers fans from all over America. Arriving a few hours before the game, I wandered through the parking lot into the connecting streets, soaking in the energetic atmosphere surrounding me.

In the United States, especially before football games, the "tailgate" scene is renowned for its diverse food offerings, including chili, pasta, and cheeseburgers. The tailgating tradition at Packers games at Lambeau Field is no exception, boasting a rich history. Fans gather in the parking lots to socialize, grill tasty food, and cheer for their team, creating a vibrant atmosphere that enhances the game day experience. Over the years, this communal activity has become an essential part of the Packers' identity and a cherished ritual for their fans. My ticket package included a "tailgate spread" buffet at a hotel within walking distance to Lambeau Field advertised as a "VIP Tailgate party." The food selection was indulgent, featuring plenty of bacon, eggs, and burgers—classic tailgate fare. At this event, a DJ played everything from Queen to modern hits, and the crowd was lively, primarily made up of attendees aged 30 and older. The bar area had plenty of seating, and I found a cozy spot in the back to relax and enjoy my beers. Even if your friends and family can't be there, you can still keep them updated through texts. The tailgate party also included fun contests and activities. While traditional tailgates are typically held outdoors, I was thankful for the indoor option due to the chilly weather, which also meant it was less crowded.

Why You Should Attend Games in Person

As the tailgate celebrations around the stadium began to wind down, I joined the crowd making its way to Lambeau Field. The area surrounding Lambeau is lively, filled with numerous sports bars and hotels buzzing with energetic music and a festive atmosphere. The crowd is lively yet well-mannered, creating a jovial atmosphere that extended into the stadium itself. I navigated to my assigned gate and entered the venue. The weather was overcast and cool, with a light mist beginning to fall. I then found my seat in section 105, row 24, seat 5, located within the "bowl," where I had bleacher seating alongside several fellow fans. One interesting feature of Lambeau is that the so-called "cheap seats," often jokingly referred to as "nosebleeds" due to their height, are actually closer to the field, providing a more intimate view of the game. In contrast, the more expensive seats are situated in the upper levels, which include suites and luxury boxes.

As for the game itself, it was rainy, cold, cloudy, and a dreary day, and i'm pretty sure I caught a bad head cold - but I was in heaven, I am a longtime Green Bay Packers fan finally sitting at Lambeau Field watching my team play a football game. This was a moment years in the making for me, and I got to experience it. The atmosphere was electric, and I was high-fiving numerous other fans when the Packers scored touchdowns and impressive plays. You could feel the energy inside that stadium, no matter the elements. Towards the middle of the game, the elements caught up to me so I went under the bleachers to the concessions to go grab a bite to eat and beers while catching glimpses of the game on the screens. I also had the pleasure of chatting with a couple from another part of the Midwest who had come to see the game. As someone from New England, I often notice that we tend to be more reserved, but in the Deep South and the Midwest, people are generally warm and friendly, so it's always a nice respite for me whenever I travel to encounter that element. The Packers would defeat the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 34-13 in front of a crowd of 77,773 people (including me!) at Lambeau Field.

Once I returned to the hotel for the night, I would change into some dry clothes, order takeout delivered to my room, and watch my baseball team, the New York Mets, compete against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB playoffs. Sadly, they lost that game and the series to the team that would go on to win the 2024 World Series.

Taking a Tour of Green Bay and Lambeau Field

The last part of my ticket package with Sports Traveler was a tour of Green Bay and Lambeau Field. The itinerary mentioned a meeting time, but it didn’t specify where to meet. I figured it was in the hotel lobby, so I made my way down around 7:45 am. When I got to the lobby, I spotted the group waiting for the tour guide. Our driver was there too, but he was also waiting for the guide. Just before 8 am, our tour guide Susan arrived and apologized for being a bit late. I didn’t catch her last name, but she’s contracted by Sports Traveler and has a background in the NFL, having worked as an assistant to former Packers coach Mike Holmgren, among others. She’s been leading tours for several years, including the Packers Heritage Trail around downtown Green Bay. As our shuttle bus driver took us around, Susan shared stories in a laid-back, conversational way. We kicked off the morning with a city tour, where Susan gave us a quick rundown of Green Bay’s history. It’s the third largest city in Wisconsin, with a metro area of about 250,000. Originally a fur trading post, it transitioned to logging and has now become the paper industry hub, producing all kinds of paper and the machinery to make it, plus it’s known for agriculture since Wisconsin is “the dairy state.”

We began our adventure with a brief photo opportunity outside Vince Lombardi’s former residence. Next, we made our way to Curly Lambeau’s gravesite. Our bus driver was a very nice man, Rick Meyers—who also works as a real estate agent—shared a fascinating story about selling a house to Aaron Rodgers during his time with the team. And here’s a fun fact: the Green Bay Packers got their name because they originated on the grounds of a meat packing plant where the workers would play football.

After checking out the Heritage Trail, we made our way to Lambeau Field for a tour. There are a couple of tour options: the Classic and the Champions tour. Our package included the Champions tour. After a quick rundown of the atrium and how the flooring matches up with the yard lines on the field, we kicked off the tour. We headed up to the Suite level, where we saw a bunch of cool photos and artwork showcasing Packers history. This level has several suites owned by both individuals and companies, which can be used for games and other events. One lady even has a suite for her bridge club gatherings since Lambeau is open 362 days a year. But just a heads up, it’s strictly a football stadium—no concerts here. Built in 1957 for $1 million, it’s wild to think about how much stadiums cost today. While they do not have events on the field during the offseason, Lambeau Field's atrium and interior hosts several events each year, including local high school proms! The suites led us to the 600 level, where we all joined in for a loud “Go Pack Go” chant that echoed back—super cool! Then we went up to the South Loft, where we got some stunning views of the field. There’s also a giant G that lights up at night, kind of like the Bat-Signal over Gotham!

We headed over to the Champions Club, which serves as the Packers' version of a "country club." Joining requires a three-year commitment and costs around $500 per game (with at least eight games each season at Lambeau Field, you can do the math). The great part is that all food is included, though adult beverages are not, and since it's all indoors, it's a great choice if you're sensitive to the weather. The lower-level Terrace Suites are available for $7,000 and offer similar perks. Unfortunately, we missed out on touring the locker room. Our tour guide, Mark, was fantastic and has been leading tours since 2003.

The last part of our visit was a field tour; while we couldn't walk on the grass, we still got a good look at the field itself.

We then proceeded to the Hall of Fame tour, beginning with a short discussion about how the artifacts are gathered. We got to see old shoulder pads, vintage leather helmets, the latest helmet designs, and some jerseys worn during games, along with insights into the equipment team's role in preserving these items after each game. After the tour and our chat about the Hall of Fame, we had the chance to explore the Hall of Fame on our own for about an hour. One of the great things about this experience is that you have some free time to wander around. Plus, the ticket allows you to come and go throughout the day. Surprisingly, the museum wasn't overly crowded, even considering it was a holiday and a postgame day.

The Packers Hall of Fame museum serves as a tribute to the team's rich history, featuring stunning exhibits and interactive elements, including a video game that lets you step into the shoes of a quarterback. There are also theaters that highlight iconic moments in Packers history, like the legendary “Ice Bowl,” where they triumphed in frigid temperatures. While special exhibits may not be on display at the moment (though at the time of my visit, there was a section dedicated to the NFL Draft in Green Bay in 2025), visitors can explore a wealth of information about the team's past and its bright future.

After leaving the Hall of Fame tour, our group hopped back onto the shuttle bus for one final journey through Lambeau Field and back to the hotel. However, our tour guide and our incredibly knowledgeable shuttle bus driver decided to take a brief detour to explore the nearby Titletown District. Inspired by Patriot Place next to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, Titletown features a hotel, a brewery, and a restaurant.

Titletown is a fascinating development that helps the Green Bay Packers generate additional revenue as player salaries continue to rise each year. This initiative also enables the team to remain competitive in the smallest market in the NFL. I can appreciate the reasoning behind it; the district is truly beautiful. However, I do feel it somewhat takes away from the team's rich history and the charm of the Green Bay Packers for fans like me, who developed a love for the team by watching games on TV and connecting with its storied past and ties to the city. My hope is that this development strengthens the bond rather than dilutes it. Only time will tell. Despite a bit of a shaky start, the tour ended on a high note, and I was very satisfied.

Why Sports Travel Packages are Great Options for Travelers

Fun fact about me: I am actually a "co-owner" of the Green Bay Packers. How so? I own 1 share of the team. I purchased this share back in 2021 as part of an offering made by the team. It's hard to ignore the presence of the Green Bay Packers in this city. This is the smallest city and market in America to have a football team.. As for my overall experience, I hit some minor rocky patches with the weekend but overall it was smooth and I was incredibly pleased. Sports Traveler is a great partner to work with for these trips, and I would rate my experience with them a solid B+ (read my review on Google).

Fan or not, I hope you get a chance to visit this unique and special place. I know i'll be back.

Walk and Wander the Milwaukee Riverwalk and Downtown

Milwaukee is renowned for its numerous bridges, a reflection of its historical development. The city was established in 1846 through the unification of three rival villages located on the east, west, and south banks of the Milwaukee River. Despite their competition, these communities recognized the necessity of collaboration to deliver essential services and foster growth. Over the years, Milwaukee evolved into a significant industrial center, known as both America’s leading brewery city and a hub for machinery. Although the industrial era has waned, the city has transformed into a remarkably pedestrian-friendly environment, featuring an exceptional Riverwalk adorned with various sculptures, including one of Arthur "Fonz" Fonzarelli from the iconic sitcom Happy Days. This scenic walkway allows pedestrians to traverse several blocks, linking key destinations such as the Historic Third Ward and the vibrant Milwaukee Public Market with the bustling downtown area.

Visit the Milwaukee Public Market

This spot in Milwaukee is well-known for its variety of attractions, such as delicatessens, wine shops, coffee bars, a seafood shack, and a cheese and sausage shop, creating a delightful environment for a leisurely walk. Many vendors also offer seating for their customers. Milwaukee Public Market also offers numerous cooking classes, happening at least once a week depending on the time of year. Cooking classes are great ways to learn a skill and you can take the food with you back to the hotel or your accommodation! Milwaukee Public Market acts as a perfect addition to the area, serving almost as a "gateway" to the Historic Third Ward district. While the area may not be large, it exudes a lively ambiance.

Bobbling to the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum

After my flight landed and before I could check into my hotel, I had some free time, so I decided to stop by this place. I’m somewhat familiar with bobbleheads, having seen them given away as promotional items at baseball games over the years. Essentially, bobbleheads feature oversized heads that wobble on a spring when nudged and they typically rest on a compact, sturdy base. Since they’re inexpensive to produce, it’s common to receive them for free with game tickets.

What I found intriguing about this location is that it offers much more than just the well-known sports like baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. It features an array of bobbleheads representing politicians, historical figures, mascots, wrestling icons, fictional characters, and more. If you're looking for a fun way to spend an hour or two, this is an excellent destination. The museum effectively utilizes its compact space with a clever bookcase arrangement and a thoughtful display of bobbleheads.

Take a Tour of the Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion

Perched on a modest hill in Milwaukee, in the shadow of Marquette University, stands a mansion dedicated to Captain Frederick Pabst, a pivotal figure in the city’s brewing legacy. Pabst resided in this mansion until his passing in 1904. Following his death, the property was inherited by his children and subsequently donated to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, serving as a residence for several archbishops. A total of five bishops occupied the mansion until the 1960s, after which it fell into a state of neglect. Fortunately, a local heritage organization intervened, restoring various elements of the mansion. Today, it remains open for tours, attracting over 45,000 visitors each year.

I decided to do the tour, and went on the 11am tour. When you arrive at the mansion, you will need to check in with the Visitors Center and Gift Shop. It is located at the neighboring building, and consists of a video room and gift shop. The attendant was a young grad student named Ken from neighboring Marquette University, we talked about the baseball playoffs briefly as I was proudly wearing my Mets hat (they had just won the NLDS of the playoffs and was moving on to the championship series, the precursor to the World Series).

We finished our tour of the mansion in just an hour. Our guide was a delightful and knowledgeable graduate student named Betty, who hails from nearby Marquette University. It was truly captivating to learn about the lives of the people who once lived there. Unlike many other mansions I've visited, this one is quite a bit smaller and lacks the usual opulence. The mansion features three levels: the first floor is designed for entertaining, the second floor houses the bedrooms, and the third floor serves as the guest area. Additionally, there’s a section on the first floor for the servants and butlers, along with a large safe cleverly concealed behind a cabinet door! While much of the mansion has been beautifully restored, the third floor is still undergoing some renovations, but they are making significant efforts to bring it back to its former glory.

Take a Tour of the Miller Brewery

When you're in Milwaukee, taking part in a brewery tour is essential. The city boasts a vibrant beer culture that its locals are very proud of. Although Miller is one of the many breweries that has transitioned into a corporate brand, I still appreciate a nice, cold Miller Lite especially during football season.

Before the tour, I want to stress how crucial it is to book in advance. I made the mistake of reserving my spot the night before, thinking it was for the next morning, but it turned out to be for the day after! I only realized this when I arrived for check-in and discovered I wasn’t on the list for the 10:30 am tour. Fortunately, they were able to fit me into the 11 am tour, and I received a Miller Lite wristband. While I was waiting, I tried a Miller High Life beer, and honestly, it was much better than I anticipated! Maybe it was just because I was at the brewery? Who knows.

The waiting area is packed with bar tables, and the walls are decorated with key moments from the history of Miller Brewing Company, wrapping up in 2016. There's a gift shop connected where you can snag anything from a Miller Lite neon sign to a cozy sweater, plus some Green Bay Packers gear too (we are in Wisconsin after all!). In the waiting area, you'll find display cases showcasing different letters, artifacts, and vintage cans of Miller beer products.

At the start of the tour, our enthusiastic guide Jim leads us into an auditorium for a brief film that explores the brewery's history, along with a tasting of Miller Lite. Following that, we take a leisurely walk along the sidewalks to admire some truly historic buildings, including the stables and the original brewery established by Frederick Miller. Next, we enter the brewery where Jim explains the brewing process in detail. Just a quick note: be prepared to climb about four flights of stairs, and it can get quite warm inside, so come ready! However, the insights he provides about their process are incredibly fascinating.

After exploring the brewery and getting a bit of exercise, we were taken to the historic caves. These caves were hand-built using shovels, originally designed to store beer barrels, but now they’re a fascinating part of the tour. As we descended, the temperature shifted from a surprisingly warm 85 degrees Fahrenheit outside to a cool 62 degrees Fahrenheit underground (who needs air conditioning when you have this!). We were about 60 feet below the surface, as the caves are carved into a hill, so the descent isn’t too steep. To top it off, we enjoyed a sample pour of Miller High Life!

After the cave tour, we strolled through the Miller Inn, which is said to be haunted! Jim entertained us with some spooky stories about the Inn, and if you're a fan of ghost stories, they were definitely exciting. It was all in good fun, of course. We were all given a small pour of Killian’s Irish Red, which again, was a better tasting pour than I would have at a tavern

After that, we had a long walk back to the visitor center, but first, we checked out the bottling plant. I noticed it wasn’t just Miller products being canned; there were also a bunch of Coors Light 24 packs on the line during our visit! Since Miller is now co-owned with Coors, they bottle, can, and distribute Coors, Miller, and Molson brands all in one place. The facility is huge—about the size of five football fields.

They also produce beer for popular brands such as the legendary Pabst Blue Ribbon and Yuengling, which happens to be one of my favorite light beers.

This tour was very interesting, really thorough, and perfect whether you're traveling with friends or on your own. There’s quite a bit of walking involved, so make sure you're ready for that, but it’s a fun way to rack up some steps. If you’re not into alcohol or beer, no worries! They have other drinks like water and soda available. The whole thing lasts about 90 minutes, and it’s definitely worth it.

Is Milwaukee Worth It For A Visit?

While this may not seem like a huge list, it only scratches the surface of the rich experiences Milwaukee offers its visitors. The Riverwalk acts as a crucial connection between the city's various neighborhoods, serving as both an important landmark and a tribute to Milwaukee's past, present and future. This sense of connectivity is further enriched by a walkable downtown area that stretches from the Milwaukee Public Market to the Pabst Mansion, culminating at the famous Miller Brewery. The Milwaukee Public Market, a bustling hub of local vendors, featuring everything from artisanal cheeses to fresh seafood, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts to the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which celebrates the quirky charm of this beloved collectible. Just a short walk away, the Pabst Mansion stands as a testament to the city’s brewing legacy, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the opulent home of one of Milwaukee's most famous beer barons. Finally, the iconic Miller Brewery stands tall, where you can take a guided tour to learn about the brewing process and the history of one of America’s oldest breweries. Milwaukee owns its working class roots and you will enjoy the numerous things to do that are reasonably priced, if not free of charge.

Five Museums in One Stop at the Springfield Museums

When you purchase a ticket to this museum, you actually gain access to FIVE museums, all conveniently located within walking distance, and all are distinct buildings within the property. You will be given and must wear a wristband, and all you need to do is wave your wristband as you enter each building. It's truly remarkable how there is something for everyone here. You can start or finish wherever you choose. Most of the patrons of the museum start with the Springfield Science Museum, as that is adjacent to the entrance. However, you are given a map upon entry, and that will help guide you to where you want to start. You can choose your own adventure! For the purposes of this experience, I will list out the museum from stop to stop based on my experience.

Explore The Springfield Science Museum

As you walk in to the main building to be admitted to the museum, you will turn towards a set of stairs where you will proceed into the Springfield Science Museum.

Proceed to the second floor, and you will find a very family friendly and kid friendly area. Exhibits in this area generally focus on the solar system, you can also “touch the Moon” and see rocks from outer space on display. There’s also numerous rocks and minerals on display in various cases. They have a “discovery lab”, which is great for kids and families. Finally, the Tectonic Corner focuses on earthquakes, of which I am personally very fascinated with.

Make your way through the Upper African Hall, where a variety of artifacts are showcased in display cases. During my visit, the cases lacked lighting, making it difficult to see much inside. Additionally, you’ll encounter animals that are native to Africa. Although they are all taxidermied, it’s still intriguing to observe them up close (though nothing compares to seeing the real thing!)

Continue down to the lower level and you’ll see Native Hall, and at the time of my visit, the science museum is evolving its display of Native Americans. I always found their presentation to be a bit tacky, so I’m glad to see that they are consulting with Native Americans and working to reinterpret the look and feel of the displays.

Adjacent to the Native Hall, you’ll see Mammal Hall and Habitat Hall, with numerous taxidermic animals on display including deer, moose, muskrats, skunks, foxes, penguins and bison. Now just imagine if they came back to life!

Finally, you will end at the Dinosaur Hall. It’s always fascinating to see how big these creatures were. How can you go wrong with a massive T-Rex?!

Walk Through the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden

After exiting the Science Museum and moving outside, you enter the the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. This is a beautiful pathway adorned with bronze sculptures that pay tribute to the beloved characters created by Dr. Seuss. It serves as a serene and tranquil walkway, acting as a central promenade that links various museums together. The centerpiece is the sculpture garden of various Dr Seuss characters. The gorgeous sculptures are the creation of Dr. Seuss’s stepdaughter and are on site in the center of the walkway. It’s also a great place to sit and take a break when you need to.

See Sculptures and Statues at The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum

Next to the Science Museum, you'll find the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum. This museum is housed in a beautiful old mansion and has a fascinating Japanese Arms and Armor gallery on the ground level. As you enter the building, you'll notice a grand staircase to your right. You can either take those stairs or use the elevator to reach the top level, which showcases a wide variety of paintings and sculptures. On one end of the top floor, there is a lovely American Paintings Salon.

While the lower level is a pleasant area to explore, the top level offers a particularly serene atmosphere. There's even a central bench in the gallery where visitors can sit and appreciate the artwork in peace. After being on my feet for a while, it was a wonderful spot to take a break, relax, and take in the view of the paintings that surround you.

See the Collections at The Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts

This art museum features numerous galleries with some permanent and temporary galleries. Some galleries, especially the most of the special exhibitions, do not allow for photography, so keep that in mind.

When you walk in, you will see the grand “Blake Court” with its giant arch. This gallery displays numerous 19th century American art paintings.

On the first level, you’ll see mostly American art and special exhibitions. You’ll see the typical mainstays of art museums, with sculptures, paintings, and elaborate pieces - such as the very intriguing “Hunter’s Cabin Door”, which resembles a door but is actually just a canvas painting surrounded by a wood border.

On the second level, you will see Late Medieval, Dutch, French, Italian and Italian Renaissance art galleries.

The lower galleries feature a blend of modern and contemporary art, as well as 20th century art.

One aspect I noticed through touring these galleries is that a good portion of the art displayed is created by artists based in Western Massachusetts and surrounding areas.

Explore The Amazing World of Dr Seuss

Did you know that Dr Seuss himself was born and raised in Springfield, MA? The centerpiece of this collection of museums is The Amazing World of Dr Seuss. I found the top floor especially intriguing, as it featured various galleries that celebrated the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel, who is more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. One room even explored his family history, showcasing a family tree that highlighted the significant challenges his family encountered. I was surprised to discover that he was the middle child and outlived both his younger and older sisters. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to take any photos in this gallery, but it was truly impressive to see how his early life experiences influenced him.

There's a cozy little gallery where you can check out his baby book that's been handed down through the years. Finally, his office and easel are kept safe forever in the main hallway. Even if this isn't his actual childhood home, it really feels like you're walking through the place where he was raised. The museum has done a fantastic job of making you feel like you've been transported back in time without you even realizing it. You'll also find a bunch of letters he wrote and received, along with many family photos. The lower level is more focused on children, as you step into the enchanting world of his stories coming to life.

Experience History at The Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History

Springfield stands out as one of the more distinctive cities in the Northeastern United States, thanks to the impressive array of inventions and innovations that originated here. The city’s history goes back to the late 18th century when it served as a stop for steamboats navigating the Connecticut River. These steamboats facilitated the movement of goods and passengers and paved the way for other transportation methods that would later be established in Springfield, such as the railroad, trolley, public buses, and cars. Many car manufacturers thrived in Springfield, although none are still in business today.

As you walk through the first floor, you’ll see the “Made in the Valley” exhibit. What do Milton Bradley board games, Merriam-Webster dictionaries, “the Breck Girl”, and Westinghouse Appliances share in common (among other things)? They were all produced in or near Springfield, Massachusetts. The Industrial Revolution played a key role in transforming Springfield into a manufacturing hub, and many products you might recognize were created here. Everything from violins to handcuffs! Lastly, you’ll discover how one of the local car companies, the Knox Company, contributed to Springfield becoming the first major city in America to have motorized fire equipment back in 1906. We’ve really come a long way since those days!

The second floor showcases a variety of industries and prominent brands that have made their mark in Springfield. Notable names include Indian Motorcycles, celebrated for their classic bikes, Smith and Wesson, a top manufacturer of firearms, Friendly’s Restaurants, known for their ice cream and family-friendly dining, and Big Y Supermarkets, a well-liked grocery chain. Furthermore, visitors will discover that Springfield is the birthplace of basketball, a sport that has evolved into a worldwide sensation, enhancing the city’s cultural and historical importance.

Why You Should Visit the Springfield Museums

You might find one or two of these museums interesting, or maybe you want to check out all five. Either way, this museum really has something for everyone. Families will have a blast at the Dr. Seuss and Science Museum. Adults will appreciate the arts and history museums. But really, there’s something for everyone to connect with at all five of these spots. Each museum at the Springfield Museums is special because it highlights the many innovations and people who made Springfield their home - from local artists creating amazing paintings and sculptures, to the children’s book author who’s still around, to the products that were invented and made here that have transformed into other things and are still used today. And the best part? All these museums are within walking distance, so you can spend a whole day or just an hour or two here - it’s all up to you.

Cook On Your Own

One of my old managers once told me that whenever he travels for work, he finds the nearest Whole Foods and gets groceries for his room that he can cook on his own. Now, this will only work effectively if you have a suite hotel or an apartment. You will also need to make sure you have the proper cooking utensils and seasonings in the residence or suite hotel you are staying. Does your accommodation have a outdoor grill and is it functioning? If so, steaks, chicken and fish are far cheaper at the grocery store or even a local butcher shop than eating out, and as you're cooking the food, you control how it's prepared and how it's seasoned. There's plenty of great YouTube channels to watch to help you cook as well, even if you're a perpetual novice like me. If you have a hostel or sharing a house with others, it may not be an ideal scenario but still worth considering.

The Hot Bar Is Calling

While we're talking about the grocery store, many local supermarket chains like Yoke's Fresh Market and Wegman's, and organic markets like Whole Foods and Sprouts have a large area of prepared foods that will usually last a few days in the refrigerator or are ready to eat. Some larger supermarkets, and especially the organic supermarkets have fresh sushi, pizza, and rotisserie chicken. Whole Foods is well known for its options at its Hot Bar, which includes but is not limited to collard greens, roasted vegetables, paleo beef, chicken vindaloo, chicken wings and smoked pork shoulder. Make sure to read the packaging to ensure it is microwavable or if it needs to be cooked. You won't have as much control over how the food is prepared, but it opens you up to different foods and you can pick and choose what's best for you. Like any buffet or salad bar though, keep in mind that costs can get out of control quickly when you add more food to the plate. If there are combo options, those might be a better option financially.

Arrange Meal Kit Delivery at your Accommodation

Do you use meal kit delivery services like Hello Fresh, Home Chef, Factor, or others? If you do, you can arrange for your deliveries to be sent to your hotel or accommodation, as long as the delivery time aligns with your stay. Typically, these services send a sealed box addressed to you, often packed with dry ice to keep everything fresh. Just ensure that your accommodation has a secure spot for the delivery, and remember to update your delivery address for future orders. I've tried HelloFresh and Home Chef before, and they provide pre-portioned ingredients, making it easy to follow the recipes and cook. Home Chef meals are usually ready to eat with just an oven needed. While I don’t use those services anymore, I do enjoy Factor, which is excellent. They offer meals tailored to your dietary preferences, including options like vegan, dairy-free, keto, and more. You can keep these meals in your fridge for up to a week, making it a great way to stick to your dietary goals while enjoying the convenience of a subscription. If you don't currently subscribe to any of these services, I have linked the three I mentioned for you to try the services at a nice discount!

Food Trucks, Food Courts and Food Halls

Food trucks serve a wide array of cuisines from around the globe, typically at prices that are more affordable than most restaurants, while still delivering high-quality meals. Although they can sometimes be tricky to spot, they are often found near breweries and events. You can easily find food trucks and food truck parks online through platforms like Eater and Facebook, or you can use the Where's The Food app to discover nearby options.

Remember those food courts at the mall? They’re still going strong! Nowadays, food courts have transformed from just greasy fast food to a vibrant mix of healthy and tasty options that you can enjoy on-site or take elsewhere. Additionally, many cities have developed food halls, which take the food court idea and enhance it with cultural experiences like arcades, shops, and offices, with some even featuring self-serve taprooms and cocktail bars. The food often comes from local eateries and can include everything from burgers and fries to sushi and pizza, with plenty of healthy choices available as well.

Stick to the Small Plates to Help Keep Food Costs Down

If you're planning to dine out at a restaurant and want to save some money, here are a couple of strategies to consider:

• Happy Hour: Typically available from Monday to Friday during the quieter late afternoon hours, usually between 2pm and 6pm. Some establishments even offer happy hour specials after 9pm. The specifics can vary widely, with some places providing only minor discounts on drinks and snacks, while others have fantastic deals. By selecting a few items from the menu, you can enjoy a fulfilling meal at a reasonable price. Just remember that most happy hour promotions require you to enjoy your food and drinks on-site.

• Appetizers and Small Plates: This is a great option if you're looking to relax and have a meal after a day of hiking or sightseeing. These dishes often complement the main menu but come in smaller portions. If you're considering side dishes, it might be more economical to spend a little extra for a full entrée instead.

You don’t have to live off of fast food and Powerbars for the week, though I wouldn't judge you if you did! It can involve preparing your meals in the kitchenette of your hotel room or utilizing a grill, or even arranging for a meal kit delivery to your accommodation during your travels. Additionally, taking advantage of happy hour specials or opting for appetizer portions can be a smart way to dine out. Food trucks, food halls, and food courts also present fantastic opportunities for solo travelers to enjoy delicious meals while on the go. Traveling doesn't have to drain your finances; while some strategies may require more effort than others, these alternatives can help you manage rising food costs, making it easier to save money during your journey, which is crucial for every traveler.

The Food of Citi Field

Hot Pastrami Sandwich

I know, I know, “damn that’s pricey”. Yes it is. The question is, how good is it? Let’s start with the process. When you order, the carver takes the brisket and begins slicing it piece by piece. Usually, you’ll see them slice about 3-4 thick pieces. They weigh the brisket and then lay it on a piece of rye bread that has mustard slathered on the slice, the other slice of rye bread is placed on top. There’s no cheese or other condiments. It’s purely meat in between two slices of rye bread with deli mustard. But guess what? You don’t need anything else! The pastrami is just pure melt in your mouth delicious. The fat is marbled throughout and the bark is tasty and seasoned perfectly. The bread is not toasted and will likely fall apart so it will get messy and you’ll need two hands to eat it. My only criticism is the rye bread should try to be toasted in some way, but at the same time, some sacrifices have to be made to keep the line moving. Even with its flaws, this is a pretty good sandwich.

Sausage and Peppers

This is a must-have when visiting Citi Field since it’s one of the most affordable and filling options, and it's just so damn simple. It's just what it sounds like: a grilled sausage on a sub or hoagie roll, topped with grilled onions and peppers. They use Premio sausage, available in both hot and sweet varieties. The sweet sausage isn't really sweet; it just lacks the heat of the 'hot' sausage. Still, this sandwich is amazing from the first bite to the last, and it's probably my favorite on the menu here. When you take that first bite, you can really enjoy the softness of the roll, the saltiness and spice (if you go for the hot sausage) of the sausage, and the tasty combination of grilled peppers and onions - everything except the roll is grilled fresh. Even though the roll is at room temperature, it holds up nicely and doesn't fall apart like the pastrami sandwich. Since there are lines at every booth, you can count on this being a fresh, hot sandwich almost every time. The sausage seasoning works perfectly with the grill, blending beautifully with the peppers and onions for an incredible flavor. Just be prepared for some water afterwards, as it can be salty, but it's absolutely worth it.

Carne Asada Tacos

While the meat is plentiful and the pico de gallo tastes good, there’s not much else to say except that it’s fine. I really enjoy good food trucks; in fact, I often suggest them to solo travelers for lunch or dinner, but this felt more like a "fast food" version. The moment I placed my order, it was ready, which honestly raised a red flag for me. It wasn’t terrible, but there wasn’t anything remarkable about it. The word that comes to mind is bland. If you have seats at the Coca Cola Corner of the ballpark, and if it's right there and you want something quick, it might work for you but no need to go out of your way for this one.

The Drinks of Citi Field

The Catch Julep

This beverage offers a twist on the traditional mint julep, featuring Hudson Whiskey, cucumber mint, and a lime wedge. It's simple yet truly satisfying. I chose a double serving because I received this awesome souvenir cup. The cocktail was fantastic; the whiskey's smoothness perfectly complemented the lime's tartness. I can definitely envision this becoming a go-to drink for hot, humid summer days. Yet, even on a cool early spring night, it's incredibly refreshing.

The Amazin’ Cucumber Lemonade

I’m not really into lemonade. It’s just way too sweet for my taste, especially when it’s loaded with sugar. But this cocktail might just change my mind about lemonade. From the very first sip, you’ll notice a nice mix of cucumber and lemonade, with a zesty lime finish and Hendricks Gin as a fantastic base (a double!) that balances the flavors without that strong alcohol kick. It’s a super refreshing drink that’s perfect for cleansing your palate. Sure, it’s a bit on the expensive side, but it’s a great pick for a hot summer day. You can find this at all the clubs, including Metro Market, Heineken Diamond Club, and the Hudson Whiskey Club on the promenade level.

Mio Sparkling Sake

After trying this in Scottsdale, AZ during a recent work trip, I was pleasantly surprised. I know this is probably a commercial version of authentic sake, and I'm okay with that. Normally, I'm not a fan of sweeter drinks, but this one is a delightful exception. It's crisp, refreshing, and has a subtle fruity flavor. It's surprising that this is an adult beverage because you can't taste the alcohol at all. Honestly, it tastes a lot like fruit-flavored seltzer, almost misleadingly so!

Perfect Game Fizz

I love cocktails, but I also appreciate simplicity. Just give me a handful of ingredients that taste great together, and I'm all in. The straightforward combination of Hendricks Gin, Cucumber Mint, and a lime wedge sounds refreshing, and it is! No fuss, just something easy to enjoy. The cucumber mint perfectly offsets the gin and the lime, creating a clean, refreshing flavor. Sure, it's a bit on the expensive side (like everything else at Citi Field), but you definitely get your money's worth!

The Clubs at Citi Field

Hyundai Club

This club section at Citi Field features a generous 1,700 square foot area situated between first and third base. It offers a premium buffet along with various food stations serving burgers, hot dogs, and nachos. Additionally, unlimited soft drinks and bottled water are included. Although the ticket price may seem steep—my ticket was $160 on Stubhub—it’s important to note that this includes food and a comfortable seat for the game. When you consider the cost of food even in the less expensive seats, it’s actually a great value. During my visit, I enjoyed roast beef, tortellini, and mustard-glazed roasted potatoes, along with a burger, hot dog, and nachos (I walked 23,000 steps that day, so I felt justified!). You also have access to a private restroom area, and later in the game, desserts like ice cream, pies, and other sweets are available. So, make sure to come with an appetite. If you’re interested in cocktails, beer, or wine, those are available for an additional cost, and the prices can be quite high. While the club area can feel a bit crowded and hectic, the experience is worth the price. Just be sure to arrive hungry.

Metro Market Club (Excelsior Level)

Situated on the Excelsior Level on the fifth floor, this club seems like an older lounge that has been repurposed for mid-level ticket holders. Still, it’s pretty simple to navigate. You’ll find a full-service bar offering cocktails, wine, and beer. Plus, there are a few food vendors around. When I visited, there was a vendor for panini sandwiches, one for Asian fusion, and another for donuts. There’s plenty of seating, and most of it provides great views of the ballpark with three tiers of seating. However, club access doesn’t include any outside seating for some reason (I’m assuming it’s to keep the crowd down out there?). Regardless of the limited food choices, this is a great place to escape when the seats are too crowded, especially on a hot summer day or a cool spring or fall evening.

Heineken Diamond Lounge (Excelsior Level)

Over the years, this lounge has gone by several names, with the most recent being "Piazza 31 Club," named in honor of the legendary Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza, who played for the Mets from 1998 to 2004. Currently, it is sponsored by Heineken, the preferred beer choice here. The lounge resembles a climate-controlled food hall, featuring a full-service bar at its center, making it an ideal spot to relax and cool off on a hot summer day. There is a wide variety of food options, including some unique and hard-to-find dishes, and the best part is the shorter lines! If you want to take a break from your seat, this is a great place to relax, with plenty of tables, chairs, and even couches available. Plus, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the New York City skyline from this lounge.

Hudson Whiskey Club

This area is essentially a 'walk-through' section located on the Promenade (top level) of Citi Field. Similar to Metro Market, it offers a 'food hall' atmosphere where you can find Halal cuisine, burgers and fries, along with cocktails, wine, and beer. These spots are particularly popular, especially during losing games for the Mets! There is ample seating by the windows to watch the game or simply take in the surroundings. Additionally, there are more seats available indoors for those looking for a quick meal.

When Should You Visit the Connecticut Shoreline?

This is important as the weather plays a critical role in whether attractions are open or not, and how much you are willing to spend.

• The summer months, particularly June through August, are often considered the best time to visit, as the weather is warm and inviting. During this peak season, visitors can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of bustling beaches, fresh seafood from local eateries, and all of the attractions are open. However, this popularity comes with crowded attractions and higher accommodation prices.

• The winter months, especially December through February, is the least favorable time to visit. The cold temperatures and potential for snow will limit just about any outdoor activity, but it’s not impossible as most state parks remain open if there is no snow on the ground, and the indoor areas of museums are open at this time. If you travel during the holiday season, take advantage of local holiday festivals.

• The shoulder seasons of spring and fall can be ideal, as they provide milder weather, fewer crowds, and most of the attractions are open - albeit the outdoor attractions have limited hours.

Personally, my favorite times of year to visit are April-May, and September-October during the shoulder seasons as temperatures are comfortable, most of the attractions are open or still open, and crowds have a lesser impact.

Other Things to Do Along the Connecticut Shoreline

• Mystic Aquarium: This legendary aquarium offers a unique opportunity to explore diverse aquatic life through interactive exhibits and engaging educational programs. Visitors can observe a variety of species, including beluga whales, sea lions, and vibrant tropical fish, all while learning about marine conservation efforts. The aquarium’s commitment to research and education makes it a valuable resource for understanding and protecting our oceans. Located just up the road from the Mystic Seaport Museum, on 55 Coogan Blvd in Mystic, CT. Open daily, check the website for hours and admission fees.

• Harkness Memorial State Park: Spanning over 230 acres, this lovely state park features beautifully manicured gardens, walking trails, and stunning views of Long Island Sound, making it a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Visitors can explore the picturesque 1906 mansion, Eolia, which stands as a testament to the estate’s luxurious past and offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Harkness family. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, with diverse habitats that support a variety of species. Families can enjoy picnicking on the expansive lawns, engaging in beach activities, or simply relaxing while soaking in the enchanting surroundings. Each season brings its own charm, transforming the landscape with vivid autumn colors or the delicate blooms of spring, ensuring that there is always something new to discover and appreciate. Located at 275 Great Neck Rd, Waterford, CT. Residents of Connecticut can visit free of charge with a Connecticut registered motor vehicle. Non-residents should expect a small fee, but only during the summer months from late-May to early-September. Best times to visit are from mid-Spring to mid-Fall.

• Connecticut Wine Trail: Six of the wineries on this extensive statewide wine trail are within a short drive, all of which are renowned for its diverse selection of wines, ranging from crisp whites to robust reds, all crafted with care by passionate vintners. Visitors can embark on a scenic drive that meanders through rolling hills and charming small towns, stopping at various wineries that each boast their unique character and offerings. Many of these establishments provide guided tours, tastings, and even events that celebrate local food pairings, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the full experience of Connecticut’s burgeoning wine culture.

• Yale University Art Gallery: Established in 1832, it holds the distinction of being the oldest university art museum in the United States. The galleries are situated over three interconnected buildings designed by four architects, and built between 1866 and 1953. The Yale University Art Gallery features an impressive array of over 200,000 works, including European paintings, American art, and ancient artifacts, making it a treasure trove for art enthusiasts and scholars alike. Visitors can explore masterpieces by renowned artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Georgia O’Keeffe, all while enjoying the gallery’s stunning architecture, which beautifully blends modern design with historic elements. The Yale University Art Gallery is located on 1111 Chapel St in New Haven, CT and is a short drive from Branford. You can utilize metered parking on streets adjacent to the art gallery, or use the Chapel-York Garage on 150 York Street. It is open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Friday and 11am-5pm Saturday-Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and all major holidays. Check website for closures as it is closed on many holidays and occasionally during the summer and winter months. The best part? The Yale University Art Gallery is FREE to visit for everyone.

• Yale Peabody Museum: Established in 1866, this museum boasts an impressive collection that spans various fields, including paleontology, anthropology, and geology. Visitors can see extensive dinosaur fossils, including a nearly complete skeleton of a Triceratops. The museum also features fascinating exhibits on ancient cultures, showcasing artifacts that tell the stories of civilizations long past. With its engaging displays and educational programs, the Yale Peabody Museum serves as a vital resource for students, researchers, and families alike, making science accessible and exciting for all ages. The Yale Peabody Museum is located at 170 Whitney Ave in New Haven, CT just a few blocks north and east of the Yale University Art Gallery. There are several nearby parking garages and you can park along adjacent streets through metered parking. Shuttles are also available. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm, and Sunday from 12pm-5pm, closed Mondays and all major holidays. Check the website, as there could be some exceptions. The Yale Peabody Museum is FREE for all to visit.

• West Rock Ridge State Park: Spanning over 1,000 acres, this lovely state park features a diverse landscape of rugged ridges, lush forests, and scenic vistas that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the New Haven skyline and the picturesque Farmington River Valley. Visitors can explore an extensive network of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging climbs, making it accessible for all skill levels. The park is also a popular spot for mountain biking, birdwatching, and picnicking, with designated areas that allow families and friends to enjoy a meal amidst the beauty of nature. In the fall, it’s a great place to observe and photograph foliage. You can also observe up to 200 square miles of surrounding views from the summit on a clear day. The state park is located at 29 Main Street on the border of Hamden and New Haven, CT. It is open daily from 8am to sunset, and the drive to the summit is seasonal - open from late May to late October. The park is FREE to visit for everyone.

Where to Eat and Drink Along the Connecticut Shoreline

As this is the Connecticut Shoreline, you’ll find numerous options to eat and drink. Here are my picks based on personal experience and Google reviews:

• New Haven’s Pizza: I’m putting this in its own category because you definitely need to try the pizza that New Haven offers at its three famous pizza spots, and it’s just a short drive away. New Haven’s pizza is often referred to as “apizza,” pronounced “ah-beets,” which reflects its Italian roots. What sets New Haven pizza apart is its thin, crispy crust that is typically cooked in a gas-fired oven or coal-fired oven, giving it a distinct char and flavor. The toppings are often simple yet delicious, with classic options like tomato sauce, mozzarella, and fresh basil, but many pizzerias also offer creative variations that include clams, bacon, and even spicy peppers. The local favorite, known as the “white clam pizza,” features a blend of fresh clams, garlic, olive oil, and cheese, showcasing the region’s seafood and it’s within a short driving distance from the cruise. My personal favorite is Frank Pepe Pizza Napoletana on 157 Wooster Street in New Haven, but you can also try out Sally’s Apizza just down the street on 237 Wooster Street in New Haven, and finally, Modern Apizza a few blocks away on 874 State St in New Haven. There’s also other pizza restaurants in New Haven that might have less traffic, but similar pizza - and quite honestly, you cannot go wrong!

• Stony Creek Market: Local family owned and operated deli serving baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, salads, wraps and sandwiches. In fact, this particular deli uses locally sourced eggs and their own exclusive blend of coffee. Open daily from 7am-2:30pm Monday-Friday, and 7am-2pm Saturday-Sunday. During the summer, the deli reopens from 5pm-9pm for pizza and seasonal specials. Located on 178 Thimble Island Rd in Branford, CT, it’s a brisk 5 minute walk up the road from the Thimble Islands Cruise port and it’s a terrific option for a first stop for breakfast, a stop for lunch, or to sample some of their pizza on the weekends in the summer.

• Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale: Open since 1979, this legendary seafood restaurant is known for their fresh catches and flavorful dishes, and pride themselves on sourcing high-quality ingredients, ensuring that every meal is a memorable experience. Where to Stay: Hyatt Place Mystic

A truly nice, relaxed hotel situated right off Interstate 95, and between the Mystic Aquarium and the Mystic Seaport Museum is a perfect hotel for just about any traveler, whether you’re traveling with the family or friends, or visiting on your own. Rooms are spacious, with wood floors (which is something I wish more hotels would invest in), a comfortable bed, a sofa bed and mini fridge. There is a hotel bar on site that offers cocktails, beers and wines with a terrific front desk staff that doubles as bartenders. The hotel also features a fitness center and pool, and offers an extensive breakfast buffet every day that is available for free for Discoverist members and above on the World of Hyatt Rewards program, otherwise it is an additional fee for other guests. Hyatt Place is located on 224 Greenmanville Ave in Mystic, CT, just up the road from the Mystic Seaport Museum, and around the corner from Mystic Aquarium. You are within driving distance of all of the attractions mentioned in this article, though you are closer to the eastern shore of the Connecticut Shoreline, and you are adjacent to Interstate 95, and the Amtrak train line that parallels the interstate highway.

There are numerous other hotels in the area as well, including Mystic Marriott, Hilton Mystic, Holiday Inn Express Mystic, Hilton Garden Inn Mystic, and the Delamar Mystic - all of which have strong reviews. Go for a Walk at Fort Trumbull State Park

If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing walk, this park is the perfect destination to satisfy that desire. Nestled alongside the Thames River, it offers an incredibly serene and calming environment, regardless of whether the weather is cool and cloudy or warm and sunny. As you walk through the park, you will be welcomed by the gentle sounds of the ocean waves lapping against the shore, the distant calls of seagulls, and the invigorating sea breezes that refresh your spirit. The walk through the park is relatively short, making it easy to enjoy at a leisurely pace, and along the way, you will come across numerous informative placards that provide interesting insights to pause and read. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore both the north and south battery, as well as the historic structure itself, enriching your experience in this beautiful setting.

Go Fishing at the Fort Trumbull State Park

One thing you’ll observe at this state park is that many visitors come equipped with fishing gear, regardless of the season (well, perhaps not during the dead of winter, but you understand my point!). This is due to Fort Trumbull having a large fishing pier where you can reel in various types of fish, and many visitors take the time to fish.

Take a Tour of the Fort at Fort Trumbull

During the summer months, the fort itself is open for self-guided tours and it’s truly fascinating to see how inhabitants of the fort lived and protected themselves. As you explore the meticulously maintained grounds, you can appreciate the impressive stone walls and the sweeping views of the surrounding area, which were essential for monitoring naval activities. If you’re able to secure a guided tour, you’ll hear intriguing stories about the fort's construction in the early 19th century, its strategic importance during various conflicts, and the lives of the soldiers who once called it home. The tour allows you to traverse the fort's sturdy walls, gaze through its historic cannons, and appreciate the breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding landscape. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes, and watch your step as you enter the fort, and ascend to the top of the fort itself for the amazing views.

Explore the History of Fort Trumbull at the Visitor Center

During the summer months, The Fort Trumbull Visitor Center is open and is a terrific place to visit - and perhaps cool off for a while! The Visitor Center functions as an adjoining museum explaining the history of Fort Trumbull. You’ll learn about its functions from its time during the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and its final use during the Cold War. Three floors of exhibits highlights the history of the site and its evolution to the state park it is today.

As you walk in to the visitor center, you will see a spacious lobby adorned with informative displays that highlight the fort's storied past, from its strategic military role to its transformation into a historical landmark. The center features interactive exhibits that engage guests of all ages, allowing them to delve deeper into the narratives of the soldiers who once manned the fort and the various conflicts that shaped the region, along with a gift shop.

Move up to the second floor, and you will see an engaging insight into the area’s rich history and heritage. The carefully curated exhibition that features artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays, all aimed at immersing them in the narrative of Fort Trumbull and its importance in American history. You will learn about the history of the site and the establishment of New London as a colonial maritime city all the way through the construction of the third and current iteration of the fort. Moreover, panoramic windows offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the experience by allowing visitors to appreciate the fort’s location within its historical context. You’ll see interactive touchscreens and text panels, allowing you to embrace the history in a three dimensional experience.

The third floor of the Fort Trumbull Visitor Center offers a fascinating glimpse into its final role as a submarine laboratory during the Cold War. This unique space, once bustling with activity, served as a critical site for research and development in underwater technology and naval strategy. Unfortunately, the Visitor Center is only open during the summer months, which is a shame because it’s a terrific museum and I really enjoyed my experience there. If you’re traveling during the summer months later in the week and on weekends, make this one of your stops. It’s worth your time.

When and Why You Should Visit Fort Trumbull State Park

Connecticut experiences all four seasons, and the shoreline is no exception. While you’ll still likely enjoy a winter visit, that will only consist of the grounds and some areas are closed, included the Visitor Center. This is more of a seasonal attraction, so the best time to visit and get the most out of your visit late in the week and on weekends between Memorial Day in late-May and Labor Day in early-September. This is where the entire site is open, the fishing pier is alive and well, the visitor center is open and you can board cruises from this site to explore the Thames River, including a “hop on/hop off cruise”. While the shoulder seasons are also good times to visit, you won’t get the full experience of visiting during the summer. I will say as well, that in the summer months, it is not extremely crowded so you will get a relaxing experience being near the water. Nonetheless, whether you explore this site in a limited or full way, you will enjoy it and learn something interesting along the way.

The First Floor: The Great River and The Barrel Submarine

Upon entering and checking in at the main desk, the staff will guide you on your next steps. You have the freedom to explore as you wish and can begin your visit wherever you prefer. Personally, I like to start on the first floor when I come here.

The Connecticut River was created thousands of years ago, and the indigenous tribes made use of the river on both sides, with some even spanning the river’s boundary. Growing up in Connecticut, I became quite familiar with the names of these tribes, including Tunxis, Quinnipiac, Hammonassets, Podunks, and Agawams. These names have been preserved throughout Connecticut, appearing in schools, town names, and even on beaches. However, this dynamic would shift with the arrival of Dutch and English explorer ships in the 1600s. What began as a mutually beneficial relationship would eventually deteriorate as power dynamics changed. Towns and cities rapidly emerged along the river, and shipbuilding became a booming industry in Connecticut during the 1600s. After all, with the ships arriving, there was a need to repair and construct more! The arrival of these ships would lay the groundwork for the American Revolution a century later.

The experience of the Revolutionary War in this area encompasses a number of groundbreaking events. This first floor also showcases a replica of Bushnell’s Turtle, the world’s first functioning combat submarine, which was designed and created in 1775. While we often associate submarines with modern advancements over the last century, their origins trace back much further, and this particular vessel might even prompt those who are least claustrophobic to rethink their stance. Just picture engaging in battles inside what resembles a barrel! This innovative craft was conceived by David Bushnell just south of Essex in Westbrook and played a crucial role in the war efforts during the American Revolution. You can not only step inside the submarine yourself, but there’s also an interactive touchscreen display that allows you to delve deeper into the fascinating history of this remarkable invention.

The Second Floor: Steamboats and Yachting

The second floor showcases the development of these smaller vessels as they transition into steamboats. Long before airplanes, railroads, and highways existed, steamboats emerged as the main mode of transport for both goods and people. You will encounter miniature yet sizable replicas of steamboats, including one that closely resembles a contemporary cruise ship known as the SS Hartford. The Connecticut River, similar to many other rivers, transformed into a major transportation route for passengers and freight via steamboats during the nineteenth century. Interestingly, the museum itself was formerly a steamboat passenger terminal and cargo storage facility, fulfilling this role from 1878 to 1931. It continues to provide cruises for passengers, but more on that later…

The second floor also showcases exhibits related to yachting, featuring a large-scale boat used for “frostbite racing.” That’s right! Frostbite racing took place during the icy winter months and evolved into a genuine competition, complete with a festive atmosphere during the Great Depression. Additionally, you will find displays on stone quarrying, timber, and the development of manufacturing along the river, utilizing the water’s power to create items such as piano keys, croquet sets, gimlets, and even tusks! You’ll also discover how the land has been used for various purposes, from agriculture to tobacco, with some practices still in operation today. Lastly, there is an exhibit addressing environmental threats and the efforts made to restore the river over the last 75 years. This floor highlights the many uses of the river and its surrounding areas, emphasizing its crucial role in the growth and development of this region.

The Third Floor: Rotating Exhibits

This floor is generally reserved for rotating and temporary exhibits. At the time of my visit in the fall of 2025, this portion featured photography of the river from local photographers

Take the Stairs. No really, take the stairs!

Don’t skip the chance to walk up and down the stairs! Here’s why. You’ll encounter a variety of images showcasing the river. Begin on the third floor and make your way down. The stairs provide a striking contrast to each level, with each floor illustrating the river’s journey from its origins to its current usage, complemented by rotating exhibits on the third floor. Starting on the third floor, you’ll find aerial images of the river and its surroundings, emphasizing the natural splendor of New England. Both the front and back staircases display numerous aerial photographs of the Connecticut River, and it will truly motivate you to delve deeper into the region in far less time than it would take to travel up and down the river! This is undoubtedly my favorite section of the museum.

Take the Riverquest Cruise

Earlier, I had mentioned that the building that currently houses the museum was once a steamboat passenger terminal. Well, if you plan a visit between late spring and mid-autumn, the Connecticut River Museum provides two cruise options for an extra charge. While it may not be a steamboat, it’s certainly the next best thing! I chose the Riverquest cruise, which takes place during midday, although there are various other cruises and times to consider. Passengers are required to remain seated when boarding and disembarking, but once the boat is fully on the river, you’re free to roam around. The cruise begins with the captain addressing everyone in a very humorous, light-hearted and relaxed manner. On this particular early autumn day at the time of my visit, the weather was pleasantly warm and sunny, and the boat was at full capacity. The lower deck is equipped with numerous tables and chairs, making it an excellent choice for a picnic, as I noticed several passengers bringing snacks and meals on board.

The crew will subsequently engage with the passengers, offering to distribute binoculars and even providing a “binoculars lesson”. I opted out of this, as my main goal was to capture some photos of the river and the boats. This cruise has a wildlife theme, so if that piques your interest, the binoculars will be quite useful. During the trip, we spotted eagles and a great egret, along with many other birds. Even if wildlife isn’t your thing, the cruise offers stunning views as you enjoy the fresh breezes and air, whether you choose to sit inside or stand outside at either end of the deck. Personally, I relished the opportunity to observe the other boats and soak in the surroundings.

The cruise ship is quite small and consists of just one level, which can feel cramped at times when there are many passengers on board. I believe my trip was fully booked, with a total of 44 passengers, including myself, along with the captain and crew. Cruises are available in February and March during eagle season, as many eagles gather in this section of the Connecticut River to feast on the fish that have moved downstream due to the icy conditions at the northern end of the river. The crew is exceptionally friendly; I had a lengthy chat with the captain’s wife about birds and photography while she captured numerous images of the birds and pointed out their locations in the trees. Next time I go on this adventure, I’ll be sure to bring binoculars!
