Indianapolis may not be on everyone's list of must-visit places, but it has a lot to offer. Home to three major sports teams and renowned universities with legendary basketball programs, this city has much more than what initially meets the eye. It's an ideal location for conventions, featuring numerous hotels and a pedestrian-friendly downtown area. As I walked around the city, I was struck by its expansive layout, which wasn't always the case. According to Your Historic Indianapolis, this planned capital was established in 1821, starting with just a square mile along the White River. Britannica highlights that the city's expansion began with the Cumberland National Road in 1827, followed by railroads that transformed it into a significant hub by the Civil War in the 1860s.
