Scenes From A Work Trip: Scottsdale, Arizona
Beyond boardrooms and meetings, a work trip offers opportunities to explore new places and plates - my experience taking in local sights and bites.
During the previous week, I traveled to Arizona for a work conference for my full time job, which significantly limited my writing time. Since I couldn't combine work with leisure on this trip, I decided to capture random moments and even took photos of the delicious food I enjoyed. This week's content will be a bit unique due to these snapshots from my trip!
The Landscape
This area of Arizona, along with the majority of the state, is famous for being right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert in the American Southwest. The photos I captured showcase the cacti and palm trees.
Interesting fact: Were you aware that it is against the law to damage a cactus in Arizona?
I think this last cactus was trying to tell me something!
The Food
I know that Arizona is famous for its incredible Mexican cuisine, but sadly, my work schedule limited my options and I went for food that was easily accessible within walking distance. No complaints though!
Coopers Hawk Winery and Restaurant:
I ordered the Trio of Medallions and it was absolutely amazing. The medallions were coated with horseradish, Bleu Cheese, and Parmesan, creating a delightful combination. The side dish, known as "Mary's Potatoes," had a creamy texture similar to risotto and a delicious hint of garlic butter. To complement the meal, I enjoyed a delightful bordeaux style red blend called "Winemaker's Barrel Reserve." It was truly a fantastic dining experience.
Nope, this isn't your typical college ramen. It's a bit more expensive, but trust me, it's worth every penny. It's absolutely amazing. I went for the Obon bowl, which had a fiery red miso broth with some spicy ground chicken, pork belly, garlic oil, fresno peppers, scallions, bonito flakes, beech mushrooms, and a perfectly cooked egg. Even though it had a STRONG kick of spice, it was still incredibly enjoyable and packed with flavor. To go along with it, I ordered a Highballer cocktail which was super refreshing and a perfect match for the spicy ramen.
Continuing my tradition of trying out fast food spots that are not available in my area, I made sure to stop by In-N-Out. Their menu is straightforward: Burgers, fries, shakes, and they are all deliciously prepared. While you may have heard about ordering fries "animal style", I personally found the regular fries to be quite satisfying. They almost taste like potato chips! The highlight for me was definitely the burger. I opted for a Double-Double with fries and a soda, and it did not disappoint. What's even better is that the total cost was only $10, which is a steal considering the rising prices of food nowadays. Plus, I didn't experience that typical "post fast food feeling" afterwards. If you ever find yourself in Arizona, California, or anywhere in the Southwest, make sure to stop by one of these locations. Just be prepared to wait in line!

This place is perfect for business travelers. The ambiance is luxurious, the cleanliness and comfort are top-notch. With a bar, restaurant, pool, and a lovely firepit outside, it's got everything you need. Situated close to various offices and right across from the upscale Kierland Commons, this hotel is in a prime location. The area is great for walking around, and on the other side, you'll find the Westin and a sprawling golf course. Check out the view from the room and a video tour of my accommodations.
